i am an Insulin Dependent diabetic too; this is my first pregnancy (i am 36) and I too have been quite well looked after (even if i don't like some of the Doctors, style). I am only half way thru my pregnancy and I monitor my blood sugars every couple of hours to keep them nice and low (hopefully this way our baby won't be too heavy when she arrives). When i first found out i was pregnant i averaged 9, now a few months later they are getting nearer to the 5 that the hospital want...but it is important so i check religiously. As SamandTheo point out if anything was to go wrong it is more likely that the hospital will identify it and help all involved quickly. good luck to everyone,

Sorry i am gate crashing this forum, i'm 20 but had a very difficult pregnancy having loads of problems usually found typical of an older mum. I have been an insulin dependant diabetic from the age of 4. You get so well looked after for being diabetic i loved it i had 16 scans altogether and i got excited at every one. I was told you are more likely to get pre eclampsia if you are diabetic, but at the same time it is my honest opinion that me and my son would not be here today if it was not for my being diabetic, i went for a routine appointment at 25 weeks and i had quite severe pre eclampsia and had no idea, i was kept in and they managed to control it until 27 weeks when i had an emergency cesarean, the whole time i felt abosolutely fine, until about 4 hours before his birth, and would never have gone to the doctors.  Anyway i know my story isn't perfect, but my point is i would definately rather be diabetic and pregnant than not. It saved our lives in a round about way. good luck with all your pregnacies and babies

    Hi Ruby

Ive just put a post on the "High Risk" forum about my diabetes.

What i will say is try not to worry, you will be offered loads of scans, regular monitoring and checkups.

I had PET with my first pregnancy and was hospitalised for high BP.

Keep in touch and i hope it all goes well!

    Cheers P

I have diabetes and take insulin.  I have a 14 month old little girl and am 29 weeks pregnant with number 2.  I am 39.  You do get extra good care being diabetic and you must regularly check your sugars and keep them tight, in my first pregnancy I kept mine around 6 and my little girl weighed in at 9lb 1oz at 38 weeks, I had a c section as she was breach, and this time I will have another at 38 weeks unless I go into labour myself before.  I go to the hospital every 4-5 weeks and now have a growth scan every four weeks.  I have not had any problems with high blood pressure or pre eclamsia, usually I am a size 16 so not tiny when not pregnant.  Good luck with your pregnancy.

I work with pregnant women with diabetes and we don't have a high rate of pre-eclampsia (v high blood pressure, which can cause kidney damage).  If you have diabetes you will get excellent care, all our women are seen really regularly by dietitian, diabetes nurse, consultant in diabetes and consultant obs, as well as the normal mw/Gp care everyone gets.  You will have more scans than usual as well, to check baby's growth later in pregnancy. try not to worry, its hard work to keep you blood glucose good, but worth it all at the end.

Your diabetes nurse will be your new best friend by the time you ahve your baby!!!
