my scan with son showed he had dilated kidneys and bi lateral cortoid cysts (?) on his brain. was told by arrogant little s*** of a doctor that it lookd like edwards but he would not explain what that meant. when he went out of the room the nurse told me what it meant. so i had an amnio and it was fine and the subsequent scan showed all was fine.  but between here and there someone lost those results and the hospital refused to discharge me until they saw me give my son his first dose of trimethoprim. completely pointless. he was even brought in for a scan on his kidneys at 6 weeks where the doc asked if i knew why i was there. when i explained the situation he became rather sheepish and told me orry, go home and forget it, its all been a mistake. great. gives you such faith in the nhs.

I have never been on a forum before but felt I just needed to tell my story at 20 weeks pregnant I was told my son had a multicystic kidney of course you worry and god only knows I was stressed so much !!!!! I was referred to the consult at my local hosp and was told I needed  c section which I had and my beautiful son was born 2 weeks early at 9lb 2oz (I am 4ft 11!!!) anyway he had to have mag 3 sacn when 12 weeks old and was told it was actually puj basically a kink in his urtheata tube it was so severve he had to have op Feb this year I was so distraught but to be honest it nearly wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be he is now absolutlely perfect and due to have check up next week anyone who is going through this is more than welcome to e- mail me lol to you all xx

Thanks Girls. I really don't know what to make of it at the moment. I'm trying not to worry too much, but thats easier said than done! I'll wait and see what the consultant says on Monday. Thanks again for your comments. xx

Hi Lizzard, i looked it up on internet as my son had this at 20 week scan and it said on average measurements should be >4mm at 15 - 19 weeks, >5mm at 20 -29 weeks and >7mm at 30 - 40 weeks.  My LO had regular scans (coz of growth) and kidneys were checked at the same time, sometimes they were within normal range, other times they were dilated.  When born he was scanned again at 2 days old and kidneys were within normal range but they still issued him with antibotics which he must take until another scan at 6 weeks old.  this is as a precaution as urine is warm and can spread infection to kidneys etc if there is a problem.  I hope some of that helps, good luck!  xx

P.S. Hi Steffy, glad you are home and all is well - love your little man's name too!!  i hope you are resting as much as you can!  take care, Lisa x

Hi, I've just got back from my 20 week scan where I was told that my baby had slight dilation of both kidneys. One is 7mm and the other is 8mm. I've got to go back on Monday for a scan with the consultant.

Can anyone tell me what the kidneys are supposed to be? I've read a thread that said their baby had slight dilation at 5mm so now I'm a bit worried that mine might be worse than I thought.

    Thanks in advance! x

Hi everyone, i had my son dylan a week ago today via planned c-sec, hes soooooo good, everything went well with the sec which is gr8. I only spent two days in hossy. Anyways, dylan got scanned for his kidney dilation last thurs, both kidneys are still enlarged right more so than left but they are only about 5.6cms so they aren't overally concerned. He's wee'ing plenty and kidney function loked good on the scan. Just awaiting peads to write to us for a review. Hope everyone else is doing ok, xx

Hi Steffy, thanks for your congratulations!! At my growth scan my LO weight was 5lb 50z but he was born 4 days later at 6lb 9oz! so these growth scans arent 100% but give an idea.  Am so glad that cord scan is good that shows placenta is being efficent etc so well done you!  Not long now until your c-sec - i bet you're counting the days! I was writing lists for the SIL as she was looking after my boys here at home during the day (to give DP a helping hand!!) i dont think he has any idea how organised you need to be!  It is good to be back home and i am feeling well and getting stronger but cant wait to drive again!!  good luck Steffy and please let me know how you are doing.  xx

Hi Steffy, sorry to hear about your scan news regarding growth and hope that today you get some good news indeed.  I had a baby boy on 10th March - they brought forward my c-sec as growth scans looked like his growth had def slowed and his kidneys did still show dilation, and when they did CTG his heart rate was very erratic and high so i was on machine for nearly 2 hours, they then got doctor in who said to do daily CTGs until he was 37 weeks and then do c-sec (which was 3 days time!!) then CTG next day showed he was fine and heart rate all normal, then 2 days later it showed me having contractions!!  so he was ready to come out.  He was 6lb 9oz and not 5lb like we had all expected and he was scanned and kidneys showed no dilation (Great news) but he is on antibiotics for 6 weeks until he has another scan to see again.  We are home now and getting used to it all with his brothers (i have 4 sons now!!)  please let me know how you are getting on.  love Lisa xx

    Hi there,

Hope all is going well, if its any consolation I had the same problem with my son, he needed an operation in utero at 26 weeks, however he's two now he has had a few ops and does have knackered kidneys but is otherwise a normal, happy, cheeky, energetic little boy.  He leads a near normal life, a regualar hospital appointments, daily meds and watching his diet but otherwise the same as other kids.  Hope this helps.  Keep positive (although I know its a v stressful time) x
