Hi ladies i had my ds on 31st march, he still has kidney dilation only mildly tho they scanned him at 4 days old, hes on low dose trimethoprim everynight to reduce the risk of urine infect and hes awaiting dye test to see if the urine is refluxing back to kidneys, this means inserting a catheter and dye. Hes nearly 11wks and doing well the dilation is causing no obvious probs.

Im expecting twin girls, one of them has dilated kidneys. At my last growth scan it was measuring 13.5mm but the right kidney is fine. It has gone up 3mm from the 20 week scan so am a bit worried but not too worried. Up to now they just monitoring her.

Hi Sara, wishing you loads of luck for today. It would be great to keep each other updated, I am 21 weeks exactly today so still a way to go yet, I will have a scan at 28 weeks so we will see if dilation is any better/ worse then. Hope your little mans dilation sorts itself out. Take care Debs.

Hi there, just wanted to wish you good luck for tommorow, my babies kidneys measured 6mm at 20 week scan. It is very worrying even though it effects so many pregnancies. Let us know how you get on. Debsx.

Hi there,
at my 20wks scan my little boy's kidneys were measuring 5.5 mm and 6 mm.
I had another scan at 35+4 (a week ago) and they were 6mm and 15mm, so the right kidney is still enlarged. I am seeing the obstetrician tomorrow and we will discuss all the procedures. My baby will have a scan at 1 week of age and they will take things from there. I am a little worried, I can't deny it, and I am hoping everything will be ok.
I really wish all of you the best

Thanks for the reply and congratulations on the birth of your son, I am glad everything is o.k with him. It seems that this is quite common so I will try not to worry too much until my next scan, it seems ages away. I'm glad i found this information on this board and hearing positive stories makes me feel a lot better.

When I had my scan at 22 weeks bub's kidneys were at 6 and 7mm so only slight renal dilation. When I went back for another scan at 31 weeks bub's kidneys were the same so we were told that the baby would need at scan at two weeks old.
I had my little boy on the 13th May and when I was in hospital after having ds I was told by the paediatrician not to worry at all because sometimes measurements like that are normal for some babies. But as it turns out we went for his scan last week and his measurements are within normal range.

Hi there, I had my 20 week scan last week and the sonographer picked up that my bubs kidneys were dilated, I have been very worried but after tralling through these posts have just come across this thread, it is very helpful and I just wanted to say thanks. I have to wait until August for my 32 week scan to see if all is o.k but I have also just booked a private 28 week scan for reassurance.

thanks posters for this info, i had similiar result at my 20 week scan and am due to have 34 week scan on monday, since then i've had growth scans and the one at 28 weeks showed kidneys were within normal range, so fingers crossed all will be well again, but if not, then at least we can we forewarned about treatments. thanks! will let you know how my scan goes! xx

I was told this at my last scan too but the sonographer said not to worry about it as it's one of the most common things that they find in anomoly scans. I've got another scan in just over a fortnight when I'll be 30 weeks to check everything's fine.

Hi Everyone
I had my 20 week scan and was told my baby had slightly dilated renal pelves/kidneys one at 5mm and one at 7mm. I was told not to worry and to come back at 32 weeks for a further scan. No more was said so of course I went home worrying.
I've done a lot of research and found that it isn't really anything to worry about. The site below explains things very clearly. Basically the tubes that go from the kidneys to the bladder appear to be enlarged either due to a blockage or just a variation in growth at the 20 week scan. Most rectify themselves at the 32 week scan. If not your baby will be checked again at birth and may be given antibiotics.
Don't look into the risk of downs thing too much as it is regarded a poor marker and only if other markers are found will it be brought up. This is because so many healthy babys have dilated kidneys.

Hope this helps.
