I had my baby in March and have posted a lot on here earlier when pregnant, but would like to say again for anyone new my BMI was 53 and I was 138kg when pregnant.
I gave birth to a 6lb 15oz baby girl and weight was then 128kg which I have maintained sine birth and now hoping to lose more.
i did not get preeclampsia or GD. i am 36.

i agree with the last post i had high bmi with last 2 pgs they were both small babies Nathan was 2 weeks late and 7lb 2.5oz and Luke was induced 3 weeks early due to pre eclampsia and was 6lb 10oz so hopefully this one will be round about 7 lb

So sorry you have been treated this way ,who do they think they are you should mae a complain about her or ask to have a different midwife. I'm very overweight and classed as obese and i was the same with my first pregnancy i've always had an issue with my weight. I remember with my first preg i was tested for gest diaebties they said i had it and when for appt after scan after appt, i remember one of the scaner staff saying ahh ya here just cause the consultant said ya a bit overweight but she refered it as just being a bit tubby which was fine. Anyway had a suspected threat of pre-eclapmsia late in the preg and seen the higher up consultant i rem hubby asking her what about the gest diaebities and she said i don't think you really have it, but all that time i was made to feel really bad by this other consultant who happened to be a man.
This preg we had been trying however i was a bit shocked though happy, but had wanted to lose weight which i had told mw at booking appt and she said that i needn't worry about that now though i don't think she has anything to worry about how annoying.
Another thing is that bodybulders bmi is over too and there not seen as overweight people so i think how they calculate it is just pants. Also how come alot of slimmer preg mothers sometimes have big babies I however had a samller baby. I hate the way big woman are treated at times and i think alot of it is down to the goverment and local councils why are there so many takeaways do you see fruit bars etc popping up and choclate is cheap but fruit and veg not. Sorry to have a rant but at the end of the day it's discrimination i'll shut up now.

OMG!! WHY DIDNT I SEE THIS TRHEAD EARLIER!!!
I went to see mw last week for check up , i am 15 wks. I know i am a bit overweight...but it isnt a massive issue to me. I am 5foot 6 and weigh 13 stone, or i did when i got weighed at my booking in app.
i am apparantly high risk and was given a severe talking to, my BMI is 29.5 so they say. and althoug i know i am over weight a lot of it is my boobs, 38f!!! I walked away and havent stopped thinking about it since, i feel like crap and now have to have the GGT test later and see the consultant...i cant believe how nasty the mw was about it all

on the other hand a friend of mine has bmi of 38 and is pg and her weight has never been mentioned, same docs, same mw team...
sorry i needed to rant i feel so sorry for myself. i just wanted to enjoy my pg and now i am worried something awful will happen to me giving biorth even tho this is my 2nd pg

Hi ladies,
Sorry to hear some of you are treated so badly. It's a disgrace; some of these midwives/consultants need a good slap.
I had a BMI of 37 when booking in, (16 stone, size 18/20). Midwife said that's nothing to worry about. Saw a consultant, (about a separate issue), who wrote in my notes 'watch diet, DO NOT put on weight'. Hello? I'M PREGNANT!
I had the gestational diabetes test during pregnancy which came back clear, had an epidural during labour that went in first time and after a relatively 'easy' labour gave birth to a 7lb 14oz bundle who had an apgar score of 10 straight away. Went home the next morning. Granted, overweight ladies can have problems during labour but so can everyone else. I think it's a real shame that we are made to feel that we could be putting our unborn babies at risk. We should be allowed to enjoy our pregnancies as much as the next woman.

OMG! So glad I saw this thread. I am very overweight, BMI of approx 53, 1st consultant I saw was great, saw one on Monday and she really, @@sed">p@@sed me off, felt like crap and still do a little. Have had 2 previous sections and this will be my 3rd. Felt like a naughty schoolgirl, also had my letter today from aneathnatist (ss) Dreading that cos I have had her before, and she can be a tad rude, will take hubby with me, then he can shout at her if she says anything. Had to have a GTT test today, cos of my size i suppose... Just feeling a little rubbish today I suppose, but feel better talking to u lot about it.

i have bmi of 46 and all my midwife said about my weight is that i will need to have glucose test at 28 weeks as my bmi puts me at greater risk of developping gest diabetes I have an appt for consultant on 1 sept but this is due to me being high risk cos of epilepsy and previous pre eclampsia hope you are all doing well take care

Hi, I'm glad i'm not the only one. I have a BMI of 41 (pre-pregnancy) don't know what it is now though. I wasn't told anything i just know my pg hasn't gone the same as my friends did. I had consultant appointments and have to have growth scans at 28, 32 and 36 weeks. At least i get to see bubs more often

Hi ladies,
I have a high BMI (43) and was really worried about my first consultant appointment at my 21 week scan this Wednesday...somehow I had convinced myself I would have some thin, miserable male doctor who would go on about my weight and risks....to my great delight a rather large, very jolly ghanian lady walked in and introduced herself as my consultant! She didn't make an issue of my weight at all but just said they woud scan me a couple of extra times as I am 'on the plumper side of life'!! I loved the way she put it so diplomatically and didn't make me feel guilty...I came away feling very reassured and very happy so just wanted to share with you that not all docs and midwifes are judgmental and nasty about size

GL to you all with your pregnancies,
Kerrie and BLUE bump x

hi im pg with my 3rd and am a bit heavier now my weight was never mentioned with the other 2 but ive got my first mw app on tues and scan on thurs and im really nervous that they will be horrible. my self esteem is really low anyway without being made to feel worse. pregnancy is a wonderful time and is meant to be enjoyed, this is going to be my last child so wanted to really enjoy the whole experience but am so scared of what they will say about my weight, my bmi is about 34ish and am approx 8 weeks but i wont know until after the scan, due to pcos havent had a af since dec.
26/6/08 22:34
im a 20 also but my mw was so nice she said if i didnt want to gain any weight then i was to go on a low salt and low sugar diet so that means i carnt have anything thats got over a gram of salt in it and make sure the fat content is 4g or lower so now for the rest of this pregnancy me and hubby are making our own meals from recipies and mine will have no salt at all in it i was told the salt and sugar can raise your bp. Noone should be put down because of there weight as long as babys healthy and you feel healthy yourself thats all that matters. rant over now lol

I was made to feel like I was a huge freak of nature too but my mum cheered me up as soon as I cried it all out to her. I've also got high blood pressure so I was starting to worry loads. My mum (bless her, I love her to bits at the mo!) just laughed and said at the same height and weight she managed to carry and give birth to me and my sister and as long I was happy and looked after myself and the bump I'll be fine! You've got to love that kind of thinking

I'm now thinking (scan being well at the weekend!) that I'm going to treat myself to a new top and some clothes at the weekend and make sure the top has something about being pregnant on it to shut all the people up that look at me and think I'm fat! I'm only a size 20 so it's not huge, I know it's not great but I'm happy and healthy (aside from the high bp lol).
I hope this makes a few people feel a bit better. If not I'm happy to send my mum round to people for free hugs

Hi Ladies
I have posted on here in the past and have just found out i am preg with #2. DIM 09.
I am dreading my booking appt after what some of you guys have said. I was overweight with ds but it was never mentioned but i am heavier now, not helped by PCOS but my consultant gynae has assisted my conception with clomid so he obviously thinks i can carry this one ok!
Thats my line that i have ready for any smart ar*e mw - well the consultant didnt think i was too fat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well i have an early scan next weds, 6 weeks then and the nurse doing it is the same that did my follicle tracking scan when i started my clomid treatment so i know she'll be o.k.

hi girls nice to see there are overweight people like me i felt like the only one (DID) everyone seems to be a size 8-10 or a very fat 12-14 .
my midwife and consultant have never made any comments on my weight, good job really as i would prob leave a stuff my face. (BMI 34.7)
as far as probs with preg goes i am having no probs, so far, only 15 weeks, and i had none with my last. however with my first my BMI was 27.6 and it was the worst pg i could have dreamed of i was in and out if the hosp from week 8 first i had sickness then v. high bp then pre-eclampsia , oh what fun i had!
so i dont think it has all to do with weight i think it is just the individual pg.
there i said my bit, i feel a lot better now, i like it here girls can i stay even though im not really high risk?

I had a miscarriage just before Easter and after trying to conceive for the past four years and was suprised to have fallen pg so quickly again. I will be 12 weeks on Sunday so I have been through almost every emotion possible in the past 11 weeks.
Last week I had my first mw appointment, I was so excited and was grinning from ear to ear. This all changed very quickly when I jumped on the scales, I knew I was going to be over weight I always have been. You are "high risk" with BMI of 36 so we will need to make sure you don't gain any weight! Looking at me like a school teacher with her glasses half down her nose. Surely the mw should be encouraging and understanding not judging!!

tracey i was measuring large with my last pregnancy at each appointment i would gain two more weeks. only one midwife said it could be because of the extra weight on my tum but as i was the same size as my last two babies and i didnt measure large with them they put it down to large baby. ....i told them more likely to be a ton of water as i had lots with the other 3.
by 36 weeks i was being told my baby was at least 9lb and by 39 weeks they wanted to induce me because they reckoned she was going to be 11lb....she was neither she was 8lb3 at 39+1wks and the morning i went in for induction i measured 45weeks (pic in profile under bumps). in the end it was as i said all water as they broke my waters it took 15 mins to break and a further 15 mins to drain the majority of it even the mw said in 15 years she had never seen so much water come out of one person lol. once my waters went my bump completely disapeared and my mw said 'you know what i dont think this baby is big at all' and she was right.

this is a subject which really grates me , I am classed as obese am 5ft 3 and weigh 12 .5 stone am 32 weeks pregnant.can honestly say I dont feel unhealthy or anything , spoke to my midwife at my first appointment at the hospital about bmi and do you know what she too thinks its a load of cr*p . Its not the only way to measure if your overweight or not for christs sake rugby players have really high bmi but its all muscle , take no notice ladies its just this stupid government trying to target people once again you can't win. and even if you are overweight as long as your happy thats all that matters xx
