Laura,
If your waters go at this stage there is nothing that can be done (GBS+ve or not) Antibiotics don't cure GBS and there isn't anything that can be done until you are in labour. GBS wouldn't have caused her waters to go BTW, it is just tradgic and very unlucky.
Concentrate on growing your baby, and talk to a midwife about what to do once in labour for intrapartum antibiotics (or not depending on hospital regs and how quickly you labour)
You shouldn't be left for more than 18 hours without antibiotics once your waters have gone, amd if you have a temp in labour you should have them straight away.
GBS affects preterm babies more than full term babies.
So, looking at the info above if you have a full term baby with no temp in labour, and are showering the midwife with waters as you push (lol!) it is about as safe as you can get with GBS - bearing in mind that 25% - 33% of women carry it (depending on which website you look at!)
I look at being GBS+ve (which I am) as being forewarned about possible problems and know to look out for stuff in pregnancy and labour, rather than being scared by it.
HTH a little,
Sarah

Hi girls
Just been told I have Group B Strep - Im 16 + 2. After reading about it, felt ok - better they know, its common etc etc. Anyway my doc said not to do anything at this stage - would be tested later, and have antibiotics during labour etc. However. on my other thread I go on, a girl has just said on there - you must get it treated now, as she lost her baby at 16 weeks because of this (her waters broke). The doc assured me it would not cause a problem - obviously really worried now. Anyone know anything about this??
Help!
Laura
Hi, I still haven't got my results yet - been waiting for 3wks. MW doing a home visit tomorrow so I hope I get them then - not holding out much hope for her even turning up tbh. Thinking back to my last baby there was a girl opposite me whose baby had to go to special care cos mum had a temp during labour - apparently that's a sign she might have strep B. She was causing such a fuss because she wanted to go home and couldn't understand why her baby was "taken away from her". xx
I'm sorry you're having such a crappy time x
I got myself tested for GBS and it came back positive, they wrote a letter to me and my MW so it was recorded on my notes.
Unfortunately (but great at the same time!) I had a very fast labour and didn't get the 4 doses of IV antibiotic in labour (one dose per hour) so as a precaution the hospital kept us in for 24 hours for observation. The hospital (Royal Berkshire in Reading) were fantastic. They checked DS every 3 hours day and night and the following morning one of the MW's thought she heard him grunting in his sleep which can be a sign of respiratory distress. We took him up to SCBU where the Paed's had a look at him, and even though they gave him a clean bill of health as a precaution they started him on IV antibiotics just to be safe. He was given a cannula in his arm (
) and every 12 hours for the next 48 hours he was given a dose of antibiotics and when that had finished we were kept in for another 24 hours just to make sure he was perfect. The whole time he was checked every 3 hours.
All in all I had him Friday 12.32pm and we went home on Tuesday at 1pm so a long stint in hospital but it was all just to be safe. As the staff said, when a baby is that tiny by the time an infection is detected it can be too late so I was happy to stay in (although a tad bored!).
IMO they really need to have routine swabs done on every pregnant woman - it's such a simple and quick test. Plus once you have had it in once pregnancy - in further pregnancies they will automatically treat you as though you still have it - to be on the safe side.
http://www.gbss.org.uk/ is the support group / charity - it's really helpful. xx
I had thrush all the way through preg #2 and at 32 wks had a swab and came back positive for Group B Strep - I also was told I'd have to have antibiotics in labour - but when it came to it i had the drip for around 20 mins before ds was born!! So it made no difference! We stayed in hospital for 2 nights though whilst they waited for his swabs to come back (plus Rh-neg, so had to have jabs) but it was all fine.
I am really annoyed because baby #1 was a fast delivery - I was told to come in early with #2 to have time for the drugs - but when I came in they sent me home again!! They need to be more careful with Group B Strep - I find they are a little wishywashy on the subject and it annoys me!

Im gatecrashing from 7-12 months
my lo was 9 days over due it all started with my waters breaking and after being in labour for 23 hours was rushes for a section as she got stuck and her heat rate was all over the place from the min i got in the hospital
anyway my lo was born with group b and was in special care for 5 days and was on the ward with me for 2 days
im very lucky that my lo is ok and was treated right away even if that ment me not seeing her till she was 6 hours old
she was born weighing 8lb and went down to 6lb 110z because she wouldnt feed
she and i were put on antibiotics (sp) te min she was born and we both got better i cant really go on about the grop b to much because my lo was starved of oxygen at birth and had to have a brain scan so there were a lot of other factors as well as the group b
i had no clue while i was pg that i had group b and only found out when my lo was a few days old what was happening
Like i said i was very lucky i had no problems when i was pg apart from a high reading on the triple test
but next ime i get pg i will be asking a lot of question

Hi, I'm 31wks pg and my 3yr old has just tested positive for Group B Strep. I totally panicked and broke down when I found out. I've never heard of someone so young getting it (I suppose TBH gps don't usually test for it). Apparently cos she has diabetes she's more prone to get it cos her immunity is low. Anyway, I was going to phone MW today and ask about me being tested but I thought I was being silly cos I'm seeing her on Thursday anyway. I'm now also wondering if it was me that gave it to my little girl. I know it must be catching cos newborns get it. My 3yr old isn't ill with it but she has been put on penicillin.
I CARRY GROUP B STREP ONLY FOUND OUT WHEN MY DD 2ND TOOK ILL AT 5 WEEKS OLD AND WAS TAKEN INTO HOSPITAL VERY VERY ILL WE THEN FOUND OUT IT WAS MENINGITIS AND SEPTICEMIA SHE HAD AND IT WAS DUE TO GROUP B SHE HAS A SWAB DONE AT DELIVERY AND HAD ANTIBIOTICS FOR 48 HOURS AND THEY SAW A GROWTH BUT THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A CONTAMINATION TURNED OUT IT WASN'T ANYWAYS MY DD IS NOW 6 MONTHS AND DOING GREAT SHE WAS VERY VERY LUCKY AS I TOOK HER IN AS SOON AS I THOUGHT THERE WAS SOMETHING JUST NOT RIGHT AS THEY SAID IF I DIDN'T TAKE HER IN THEN SHE WOULDN'T BE HERE NOW.SHE DIDN'T HAVE FLUID ON THE BRAIN AND SHE CAN SEE AND HEAR I THINK WE WERE ONE OF THE LUCKY ONES AND BLESS GOD SHE'S STILL HERE.I ALSO HAVE A DS WHO IS 4 AND HE WAS FINE BUT YOU CAN HAVE A SWAB DONE EVERYDAY AND IT CAN CHANGE FROM POS TO NEG AS I HAD ONE AT 34+4 AND HAD DD AT 35+6 AND WAS POS YOU JUST NEVER KNOW.

Hey all
i forgot i had done this thread lmao... congrats on your tests,,, they do say it can come and go though dont they? i dont really know too much about it just they will test me regulary throughout pregnancy??...
Results came back negative! next test at 24 wks - fingers are still crossed!
Had test done on Wed of last week and was quite relaxed, my doctor went through all the details of what could be done during labour, he also said that i could possible have a c section as the baby is not infected until it passess through the birth canal! My doc did stress that the test would be done again after 24 weeks and that i would be monitored more due to what happen previously. Results should be back by Monday afternoon, but think i will leave it until Tues to call because i do not want to be disappointed on Mon just in case they are not ready yet. (fingers crossed)
I had strep b and was given a dose of antibiotics at the beginning of my labour. My pg notes had stickers all over it saying Strep B and when my waters broke I phoned the hospital immediately and they said to come straight in. I am also diabetic. I only found out because at 30 weeks I had a bleed and swabs were taken at a different hospital the other side of the country ( I was away visiting my parents). When I asked my consultant about strep b he said that britain does not test as you may not have strep b when you have the test but could get it sometime before you give birth. I thought the way may hospital dealt with it was excellent.

Thanks so much Sarah - youve really reassured me. Saw the doc yesterday and they said it has no link to miscarriage too - so youre right, got to just concentrate on growing this little one!
Thanks again
