hi girls when i was ist preg with my son i had an overactive tthyroid and i was losing 1 stone a week i was having palpataions continously and my boys heart rate was 190 bpm i was treated with prpyltyroicil think i have spelt that right and it started easing the symptoms and gradually helping my thyroid as my preghnancy went on i had a blood test every 2 weeks im suprised i had any blood left lol as it was fluctuating 1 min very over next min really under i had growth scans done once a month and saw an endocrinogist every 4 weeks and the cons obstetrician every 2 weeks
i was up the hospital all the time they told me that i would need a c section as they couldnt tell if my son had a goitre or not as when you are preg the medication you are on and plus the antibodies from yopur thryoid cross the placenta and stimulate babys thyroid which is not needed until birth therfore causing a goitre but they were preety sure he would have 1 ( i never got a straight awnser ) the night b4 my c section i went intop labour and had my son naturally and he didnt have a goitre .
after my son was born they took blood straight away as there was a peadeatrician at the birth but they couldnt do a proper test on the blood as it was taken 2 soon after birth they monitored him every 3 hrs or 2days sounds daunting but they dont really let u know wat they are doing they pretend they are going round all the babies as a routine .
when he was 4 days old he had another blood test they squeeze their hand into a clench fist and out a lil needle in and let gravity do the work they dont suck it out with a syringe he also had another blood test when he was 2 weeks old aswell as the heel p*** test that the hv does he has a completely normal thyroid .
when you next go to the midwife or hospital tell them u want to see the obs/gyn otherwise nothing will be done basically they will never give u a straight awnser because basically they dont know themselves until baby has arrived as long as u have good antenatal care everything else will follow smoothly
9 months later i have had my thyroid removed as the probs didnt go away i hope that you all have a happy and healthier pregnancy than i did but i wouldnt change it 4 the world lol xxxxxxx

Hello all, I'm glad I've found this thread!
I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid at the beginning of the year after feeling constantly shattered and my failure to loose much weight, even after starving myself!!
I'm now 9 odd weeks pregnant and last week booked myself in for a blood test as was more shattered than normal!
They've upped my levothyroxine to 150micrograms a day.
I usually (well, in my 8 months of knowing he he!!) have a blood test every 6/8 weeks to see how I'm getting on but maybe this is because I'm a newbie? They've said to have another test in 6 weeks but tbh, if I feel no better in a fortnight then I'll go back and be tested again.
No one had mentioned to me yet about having the baby tested after the birth but I think this is the norm as this is what I've found when researching under active thyroid and pregnancy. It amazes how different everyone is treated, considering the NHS money all comes from the same "pot"

Just to update you all, my TSH levels were 29 at their worst, but 0.3 at my last blood test at the end of July. Another check up now at the end of Aug but things seem to have sorted themselves out. I'm now just very tired from the pregnancy rather than the underactive thyroid. Not diabetic either, which was a weight off!
Baby is doing and growing fine, always the same, the mother suffers while the baby takes everything you've got!
Glad to see this thread is still providing people with support and good advice!

its something like a 1in 5 chance that you will need extra thyroxine but as long as your levels are normal the risk to baby is very low i hope this helps but a lot of it depends on why you are low as some conditions are accelerated by pg hormones which is why you have extra checks.
i have no thyroid as mine was removed so my risk of needing extra is low so i only need couple of extra blood test at 8 weeks i had a routine one then they are testing me again at 24 then afer birth a lot depends on your midwife/consultant and there experiances

Hi Just found out I'm pregnant again with 3rd baby, but after 2nd nearly two years ago I found out I a very under active thyroid I think they said it was 198 it seem to be okay at the moment but am very worried about any sorts of compications. After reading internet it seems your chances of having everything ok is very low, please peoples help me to find some optimissum.

No haven't had this, I have an underactive thyroid and am pregnant (35+5) and as far as I'm aware pregnancy increases your need for treatment and your thyroid becomes more underactive due to the demands of pregnancy. If yours is now normal it may mean your test was slightly under on that day but has corrected itself - if you're worried you should wait a few weeks and get tested again and also speak to your doctor about it.
However if it's not underactive I would take that as a good sign xxx

Hi All
Just wanted a bit of advice really - shortly before falling pregnant i'd had blood tests as i am overweight and have been struggling to lose any. The thyroid function test came back as below normal levels. No treatment just a retest in two months - by the time i went back to be retested i was pregnant and the results were normal. The doc didn't say anything but am now worried that my levels have only increased because of the pregnancy. Anyone out there had a similar experience?

It still amazes me how different gp's and midwifes are coping with thyroid problems in pregnancy. Have to say that in Wales, they're really hot on it. As soon as I was booked in both times with my midwife, they referred me to obstetric led care at the hospital rather than just seeing the midwife at my gp's. Had no problems with thyroid in first pregnancy, but as soon as it became clear this one was a problem, I was referred straight to the endocrine pregnancy clinic.
It is really dangerous to self diagnosis and alter your meds without speaking to your consultant first, whether pregnant or not. If you take too much, you risk poisoning the baby and giving yourself a heart attack. It's what frightens me when they say I have to have an increase, I get palpitations normally where my body readjusts. But I must be so underactive on this one that I haven't had any when they increased my dose twice in the last month.
Got another check up Monday with endocrinologist for thyroid function test and glucose tolerance tests now. Seems diabetes goes hand in hand with thyroid problems cos they're always testing me for that! All negative so far though!

hi
I had a lump for about 4 years which pg accelerated the growth of they did a biopsy in the end and decided to take it out as it looked dodgy
but is very comon to have a goiter and not have affected thyroid function pg may accelerate the groth but as long as your bloods are ok should be fine as biggest risk to baby is over or underactive thyroid
is worth asking to see a thyroid consultant for a scan and biopsy just to be on the safe side
hope this help answer some questions

hi to every1,ive just been reading your threads & feeling the same as you lot.only getting no answers at all.this is my 5child,im 33weeks preg,& at about 3months preg my doctor told me ive got a thyroid in my neck.rushed me to nurse asking her to do some bloods said it was very important and he said i need to keep a close eye on you.i was shocked but he didnt explain wat it meant so he left me thinking oh my god somethings rung im going to loose baby.so came home and looked it up on internet got all the bad news about it,&cried all over that weekend.i finalley got to see my m/w& she checked my results and said they were ok;i feelt great had some more bloods done at 28weeks;and was told they were ok.anyway got to see my preg consultant and told him wat had gone on as there was nothing in my notes.he seemed conserned & said he will get in touch with a consultant who deels with thyroids,he said if not heard anything within a week tell my doc & he should get in touch with the consultant.i neva heard anything so went to see doc and told him,he said he neva said iv got a thoyroid,so i had to tell him that he sent me 4 bloods he then said oh yes everything is ok its all in my head,so now im very confused because iv still got lump in my neck,iv seen m/w and told her &asked her if she could help and asked could it be aoveractive or underactive thyroid & she said i need to see a proper consultant but she couldnt help what can i do i really feel like im going mad, especialy now iv wrote all this and drove everyone else daft im sorry but can eny1 give me some advice pls+
14/7/08 15:59
well my gp was unconcerned about pg my bloods show my levels are fine so he will test me at 7 months to check and after delivery other than that he said it won't make any difference
he said it is only occasional that an increase is needed as you have to support baby ect but not all need it
think i prefer that they don't get stressed here
13/7/08 19:38
just by totall coincedence i have my annual check up wth gp tommorrow after bloods last week so i'll mention it but my gp and midwife said it shouldn't make much difference
i've had a full thyroid removal after my pg with ds 3 years ago accelerated the groth of a cancerous gotier so i know pg can affect thyroid function (as they said at the time all my symptoms were made worse by pg) but as i have no thyroid to affect may be different ?
13/7/08 15:24
thats really bad cos your thyroid is affected while your pregnant. i dont think my midwife was going to refer me to the hospital consultant until i mentioned it and i dont think midwifes are very clued up about how much it matters. maybe you should mention it next time you see her.
