Hi Girls,
If you've read this thread in total you'll probably have seen my story.
In brief, my results came back as 1:2 chance, I ended up having the amnio and, thankfully, after 3 days of waiting my results came back normal.
I didnt want to read and run, just wanted to give you ladies hope.
Whatever decisions you have to make (regarding amnios, scans etc), only you can make them as noone understands your personal situation more than you.
Wishing you all lots of luck xx

Please give me some advice! im just 20 years old, 19weeks pregnant, partner of 3years has just left me because he doesnt want anymore kids... he already has 2 to 2 diff women. I had triples test done and hospital rang me yest saying my risk factor for my age and to say iv no family history is far higher than expected. (1:240) theyd booked me in urgently for n apointemtn and i had an amio this afternoon... i get my results in a few days. im scared sick. my partner has a child with autism and one who was born with all his organs outside his body, i told the lady that today and she siad iv tested fine for that so not to worry, his brother also has a daughter with cerebal palsy. these dont show up on screening tests. She did reassure me in sayin many amnios return negative and all is fine, she also said she'd had a patient with a 1:4 risk and she'd had a healthy baby girl. im worried sick, im so young and on my own, i know my ex obviously has things in the family but ..oh i just dont know what to think, im so scared. the sonographers an the doctor were ll lovely, they even told me the sex and gave me a free scan pic even though they said it wasnt allowed as i was there for testing purposes but they wanted to cheer me up as i was all cheerful!... and its a girl! iv got all my fingers and toes crossed for her, poor little mite :'( i dont know anything about these amnio results or anything so if any1 could help it would be really appreciated x

Firstly id say you don't have to go through any more tests its your choice whether you do or not,if its for an amnio you need to think about what you would do (if anything) if the results came back positive for downs syndrome. If like me you would not go through with a termination then is it worth goin through with the amnio? as it does carry a risk of miscarriage.I chose not to have the blood tests done but thats personal choice and the right one for me.So think about your options, there are alot of lovely ladies on here who could advise you too but in the end its your decision. Try not to worry too much, Good luck x

Hi All
Thanks everyone for sharing your stories x
Lucalilly & Sharon - you are so organised! Packing bags - whats that?!
Lucalilly - you may have baby before me! As you are being induced - you never know, if I am overdue (if baby should ever turn)... I was induced on my 1st pregnancy at 38 weeks and it was fine....
Sharon - I am desperately trying to avoid a C section - hence the acupuncture! If that fails - I am going to try to have it turned and leave it to the last poss minute to have a csection...You never know may turn at last minute! Would be really difficult with a 2 year old I think to have a major operation..... I too have had lots of scans recently and yes baby looks so called 'normal' - however I know that scans dont pick everything up so I am still nervous....
Let me know how you both are doing

Hi,
Thanks for sharing your stories ladies, it really is a massive help to hear 'real life' accounts of what actually happens.
Baloobears- how long do you have left to go? I have started packing my hospital bag but at this rate I am going to be taking a suitcase AND a bag!! I will be 34 weeks on Tuesday but am being induced due to having to inject clexane for previous blood clots so only have 4 or 5 weeks to go!
Kate- good luck with the accupuncture, hope your wee one plays the game and turns around! I have def been thinking more and more about the whole down syndrome thing, I am just worried that my whole birth experience is going to be ruined by constant worry and uncertainity, even once baby is here I feel like I need a conclusive blood test one way or the other ( except if it is really obvious that baby does have ds)
Anyway, I suppose we are all nearing the end of the journey and will all have our wee bundles of joy soon!

Hi Kate and Lucalily
Kate - Will you have a c-section if baby is breech? Hope that it goes head down for you.
Suppose as we are getting closer to the births that we will wonder more about downs syndrome. Had so many scans now and they all show the baby as "normal" whatever that is! Baby is big too. I will not have any more scans now and my odds remain at 1 in 14, so it's just a waiting game really. To be honest, used to dread the scans anyway as they were only looking for markers, only plus side was that I got to see our baby regularly!!
So excited that we are nearly there! Can't wait to have the baby at home with us! Bought a new car last week, picking it up tomorrow, needed a 5 door because of baby! When we pick up the car will go off to Mamas and Papas to get the pram/pushchair/carseat/cradle bits!! Feeling real now. Even packed the baby's bag!!!

hi, my situation was a bit different to yours as i wasn;t high risk for downs. the midwife who delivered george didn;t realise that he had downs and he scored 9 on the apgar test. it was when we had been transfered to a ward a couple of hours later that i started to wonder and then the midwife on the ward had obviously got her susp***ions as i saw her looking at this palms - alot of babies with downs only have a single crease. i then asked her if she thought he had downs and she said she would get the paed to come and check him. it was then that certain other features etc were pointed out, like he was very floppy, body temperature had dropped, he couldn;t feed and he had more skin at the back of his neck, also the slight slope to his eyes that i'd noticed initially. they did a blood test the following day which confirmed that he had downs. the test took 2 days to come back. hth but i'm sure they will thoroughly check your baby once its born if you've been high risk. take care, claire xxxxx

I could see straight away when Lucy was born that she had downs syndrome, although the midwife disagreed!! but said she would get a paed to check her over. My husband couldn't see it either, but I just knew. She scored 8 then 9 on her apgar. Her muscle tone was floppier and she had trouble maintaining her temperature. She had a heart scan the next day (which was clear) even though we had not had blood test confirming that she had DS. We didn't have the amnio after our 1:87 risk and come birth day i was very nervous. Even now some people are surprised when we say she has DS, I don't "see" it anymore anyway she's just our precious daughter x

when james was born, i thought we would know straight away by looking at him but we didnt. However, the midwives knew by various facial features and the paed. who checked him was 99 percent sure he had downs. She took a blood test and the results were phoned through to us 2 days later. That was a difficult 2 days because no one who visited could see it. Once the features are pointed out i think you then see it but to us and even 2 weeks on he looks like most other babies. Hope this helps answer your question.

You have so voice my thoughts! I too have thought about this (particularly as due date gets closer!) Any responses appreciated....
Baby still breech - not good. Actually booked in for acupuncture next Wednesday in a last ditch attempt to move it prior to being referred back to consultant. Im not really into stuff like this at all but trying anything! If anybody else has experienced this would be good to hear about your experiences.
Getting close now - are you getting excited? I go on maternity leave next Friday...Cant wait.
Hope your ok....

Hi,
Was just wondering if any one knows what happens once your baby is born if you have been high risk for down syndrome? I know that in most cases it is probably obvious by just looking at baby's features if he/she has down syndrome but what if the baby 'looks' ok ,would they investigate any further or just give you the all clear? Sorry if this sounds like a really silly question but i was just thinking about it the other day and now can't get it out of my head!! I have read a couple of stories where women have said that the baby looked fine when born but found out a couple of days later that baby did infact have down syndrome.
Kate- how is it going with trying to turn the baby from breech?

Hi Sunflowerandrea, I hope you are well, you sound a bit more upbeat in your post, so the counselling must be helping you. Take care and remember that we;re always here for you when you need a friendly chat, love Claire xxxxxx

Sorry 2 say that the only way 2 tell if ur baby as ds is by invasive testing... u cannot rely on a scan ladies... pls dont rely on any kind of scan x
