just wondering if anybody knows why tour cervix begins to shorten in pregnancy

I think it's in preparation for dilating. Imagine you cut a piece out of the leg of a pair of tights. if you stretched it it would get shorter - so I think it's so that it can stretch when your baby wants to come out. This is not a proffessional's comment though and is just what I had always assumed. So if you want to be sure ask a MW, Dr. or consultant.
