Hi, My baby is 9 week and we are taking him to the swimming baths this week for the first time. He is also a big baby so we have bought him a wetsuit from Next and the Little Swiimer nappies in size small. We will see how warm or cold it is this time so we know what to put him in next time as we also bought him some little swim shorts with an in built nappy. They were on offer from Toys R Us for £2.99. They are size 6-12 month but look extremely small. Let you know how we go on.

Hi!  I'm new to all this forum stuff but have found some of your comments really useful.  I have an 8 week old little boy who loves his baths and the power shower(!!) so we want to take him swimming but I am a bit unsure what I need in the way of "kit"??  We will be taking him to our local private leisure club so the pool is about 30 degrees.  Will I need a wetsuit and a swim nappy?  If so any ideas where I can buy them to fit my boy, he weighs nearly 15lb so he's not a small baby.

I find the float seats are Ok for the very tiny LOs bit it is rather passive position for the older ones. Try just armbands as then it is much easier to lift LO up and down and splash in and out of the water, lie on their back/front etc.

Hi, I go to baby swimming classes call Water Babies- they are really fab and very professional! They teach you how to do lots of activities and we really love practising them on our own when we go swimming as well. My lo can hold onto the side on his own and float on his back and he loves humptey dumpteying off the side. All the babies learn to swim under the water as well and they absolutley love it- most of them in our class have started kicking their legs now as they go around the pool as well which is really great to see as they are all about 3 or 4 months old. Also the pool is really warm which is gorgeous.

when i take dd we do ring a roses and on all fall down we put her under the water, when she first started going i would blow in her face but as she recognises the song now she automatically hold her breath, we also do the wheels on the bus just to get them moving inthe water and having fun. dd's fav is hokey cokey at the toddler swim were all the lo's face each aother doing the actions.

We go to swimming classes. Try the Grand Old Duke of York, lifting them in and out of the water at the appropriate times. We also do the hokey cokey, the wheels on the bus and five fat sausages frying in a pan, sizzle sizzle sizzle sizzle one went BANG (you wiggle your fingers in the water and then clap on the bang). We also do pulling the babies swaying them from side to side on their front, and putting them on their backs kicking their legs for them. To the previous poster, your swim teacher sounds a bit misinformed. Their lungs won't be damaged by going underwater unless they repeatedly aspirate i.e. breathe in the pool water, in which case they might get a bit chesty. Before this happens they will have a good old cough - babies and adults have a strong cough reflex - and so it's quite difficult for them to get water into their lungs. Babies have an automatic reflex to hold their breath. We got a great shot of my dd doing just that underwater. They are much more likely to swallow it instead!!

We go to a great class but you could try some of the songs and actions with LO...
Humpty Dumpty... Sit on the side and on fall count to 3 and lift high in air and into water...
There were 5 in the bed... Rests on your shoulder on his / her back.. As you move forward and sing on roll over you lift and roll from side to side
Hear we go round the mulberry bush... We go round in a circle but could just move round and we do splash your hands, wiggle your toes, wash hair etc
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star... Lie LO on back... Make the star with your hand , give loads of kisses and cuddles
have LO facing you and sing any rhyme moving yourself backwards
There's another lovely one about a rocket but was new to me... Just a kinda countdown and blast off... Lift them out of the water.
Also do one where you lower baby's shoulders under water, then chin and on last one blow into eyes and lower whole face! When you blow the baby will hold there breath automatically for a second or so.. Sounds scary but really works!
We then play with floats / toys / watering cans etc

My lo loves it if you sit him on the side of the pool then go 1-2-3 and catch him as he falls in the pool. We also take a couple of bath toys, he loves squirting me with water!
