hi ladies, I just wanted to say thank you for all of your replies and to sound off about my drs appt this morning. I have been feeling better over the last few days and have even managed to put it out of my mind on the odd occassion.
however i went to see my dr this morning to see what the results from the smear were and they have come back as severely abnormal! Now i know this still doesn't mean they are cancerous but he was so serious (but v friendly too) that I came out feeling v v scared and can't believe i have to wait until the 9th for my colopscopy (how will i manage to keep putting on this face of being normal when i can't stop thinking about it). what if they have to do a biopsy?
sorry for going on and on but don't want to keep burdening my dh with my thoughts, this is more of a rant for me i suppose!! jessx

hi jess,
I had abnormal smears for 18 mths, i had to keep going back every 6 mths, in the end i had treatment to remove the abnormal cells, i was supposed to have another smear 6 mths after to check that everything was back to normal but i fell pregnant in that time and so they wouldnt give me a smear..it was a scary time but 3 mths after i had my little boy in feb this year i had a repeated smear which came back clear...
by no means does it mean u have the big C which alot of ppl think they have, i was scared to death but it took 5 mins to lazer the cells away and now i am clear.
do u smoke? if so i know that smoking can alter ur smears...
u will be fine hun dont worry xxxxx

It probably won't make any difference anyway- if it's CIN I or CIN III they'll still have to have a look and decide what treatment (if any!) will be best? Look at it this way, if you hadn't gone whatever is there would've gone unnoticed until maybe it was too late? Good luck!

It should say on your referral letter what the abnormality was (CIN I, CIN II or CIN III) but if it doesn't don't worry, you're getting checked and thats the most important thing. I've had abnormal smears all my life and after my first I too had a colposcopy (I've had 2!). That time I had a cone biopsy as well but all the abnormal cells were removed. The 2nd on I just had laser treatment. I have yearly smears now to keep an eye on things.

I was just wondering if anybody on here had been referred to the hospital for a colposcopy after just 1 smear test. I had a test before my holiday and have come back to a referral to the hospital for a colposcopy am quite worried as other people i know who have had treatment had a 2nd smear first, does this mean i have a high abnormality count? sorry to waffle on but am keeping calm amid alot of nerves, worries and questions. can't phone for an appt until weds which doesn't help either. thanks jess

Try not to worry. If they're severely abnormal then they most likely will have to do a biopsy. I've had two done, and really its okay? They were cone biopsies and were done as a day procedure (in at 8am, out by 3-4pm) and the only 'pain' I had was like really bad period pains for a few days and a little bleeding as I healed. Both times the biopsies 'got' all the abnormal cells before they developed into full cancer, so really, be glad you went for your smear and they're able to treat you.
