My DS is on a dairy free diet,he's intollerant to lactose and soya.He was also put on Nutramagan formula but i found this just masked any flavour that i mixed it with(porridge etc)so i started useing rice milk for everything other than his bottles.

I've finally got my head around most of it now but found it rearly hard in the beginning.

Yes. Dd is now 1 and still has a severe skin reaction to milk and yet I have not had to cut dairy out of my diet. If she drinks/ eats any dairy then she gets excema. hth

Hi this is the first time i have used this forum so hello to all.

Last nite i notice my son who is 5mths got blotchy rash on his chin after i gave him some mash potato.  As i am a nurse i let it settle then later did a skin test and put a little cows milk on his chin and he reacted again.  I took him to the hospital where they said it was a milk allergy.  What i dont understand is why these symptoms have not shown before as i am breastfeeding and i have been having dairy products all the time.  Has this happened to anyone else?  If so did you get an explanation as to why it happened?

    Thanks, Amy

My little girl is 22 months now and the pedeatrician told me to keep her off dairy in Nov 2007 as she had eczema and was constipated a lot.  She is so much better now.  I give her goat's milk/butter.  The Dr said that there has been research recently showing that those who are allergic to cow's milk are necessarily going to have the same reaction to goat's milk as was previously believed because the two animals have different DNA make up.

They say that kids usually grow out of this by age 3 or 4 so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Hi Caroline as promised Banana Muffin recipe.  Before I start I used 85g of honey instead of sugar for a low sugar alternative but I will copy the original recipe then you can choose.

    4 Ripe bananas

    200g Sugar

    125g butter (pure marg)

    1 teaspoon vanilla

    1/4 teaspoon salt

    1 teaspoon baking soda

    1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

    200g flour

In a food processor blend bananas, sugar (or honey), butter & vanilla. Then add remaining ingredients and blend till smooth

Either put in to greased (with pure marg) muffin trays or a loaf tin (can be muffins or banana bread)  and bake at 180 degrees cent untill firm. About 20 mins. 60 mins for loaf. I took them out early the first time I made them and they wern't quiet right so I would say a good 20 mins.

This recipe is from The child-Friendly Food Allergy Cookbook it was from WH Smith online. It is American so recipes vary from our day to day food but I would recommend it.

Any other questions PM me. Enjoy they are yummy!!!  xx

my ds is nearly 9 months and we found out when he was 6 months that he had a dairy allergy, i dont know if anyone else has been told this but my hospital said to keep away from soya to as nowadays if a baby cant have dairy then quite often the allergy to soya goes hand in hand. hth xx

Hi My dd is 16 months and we have known since she was 6 months of her allergies. I have found it easier then I thought but you may find you have to be a bit more organised with your meals than your other friends with babies. When Mia was a bit younger I always carried a little pot of pure with me when I was out as if I get stuck she could have a piece of toast as a snack or you can have a jacket pot with beans or a sandwich and add the marg yourself as the dairy free options are limited in most cafes/restaurants most of them can only guarantee the chips are dairy free which is irratating!  At home I find dd can have most of the things we have like tonight we had cottage pie I just took a portion out before I added the milk to the mash.

Annabel Karmels book and ice cube trays were a godsend at the beginning but a lot of her recipes for toddlers have egg in them. You can buy egg replacement from holland and barrett  which I used for my lo 1st birthday cake but I think I need a bit more practice because it was as flat as a pancake! I get the kallo low salt stock cubes from there too which are great for casaroles so easy to make.

I have lots of receipes if you would like them a firm fav is bananna muffins which go down well.

I have used the cheese sause for things like cauliflower cheese and dd seems to like it. Some easy snacks are Marmite sandwiches, homemade houmous, breadsticks, pittas, english muffins, Most Organix snacks, cow and gate berry biscuits, loads of roast dinners and spag bol!!!

Thanks for the tip about the ice cream I do feel cruel when she is looking at everybody else eating ice cream and she can't have one so great tip ta for that!

PM me for any recipes or advice more than happy to help,   it can be hard to get your head round at first but I have found my lo eats a lot heathier which has to be better in the long run.

I haven't really tried to make any meals that would contain milk/cream/cheese because I'm LI anyway so tend to make tomoto/veg based dinners instead and dd oftend has what we have.  We use Alpro anyway and have also bought Pure margarine.  For a snack Boots do a rusk that's not advertised as milk free but there isn't any in it

For recipies using soya milk/products have a look at the alpro web site. They also have recipies on the side of their milk cartons.

Both ds1 (2 1/2) and ds2 (18 weeks) have dairy allergy.  I have always been sad about my oldest not being able to have an icecream in a cone. However this year I have found some dairy free cones (In Morrisons) made by carousel and the swedish glace dairy free icecream is great! Askeys dark chocolate sauce is also dairy free - so he had his first 'get icecream and chocolate sauce everywhere' session a few weeks ago!

You can make up custard with birds powder (dairy free) and soya milk. The alpro custard is extremely sweet so I find this a better option.

I will look out for that cheese sauce. Thanks for that.

    Fin x

My DD1 had a milk allergy and she had wsoy formula, and  then when I started weaning i used initally the wysoy and then Goats Milk. It smells better than soya, and has been provien to help with various problems including excema, asthma, constant runny noses and bad chests. She did fab on it, and more to the point, there is light at the end of the tunnel. We started giving her yoghurts and cheeses made from cows milk and then at the beginning of may this year, aged nearly 3 and half, she has gone on to ordinarly full fat cows milk and is fine. She has simply grown out of it. Don't worry, your lo will be fine. It's just a pain!

I used the cheese sauce but I found it was thin but could be how I made it. I grate soya cheese & freeze it in little pots.

dd has soya yogurts and Pure on bread and in mash etc. We use olive oil instead of butter too. She is bf and so we're not worried about her not getting enough milk. Isn't it annoying when they say it's just excema! She gets a rash and dry itchy skin around her mouth, on her chest and across her right shoulder if she has milk or milk products and can't sleep and scratches 'til she bleeds. Luckily We noticed it quickly and put her on a dairy free diet and just told the gp rather than asked. (since been confirmed by a paediatrician!) She is clear of excema now and we just put nappy balm on every night.

I use Vitalite as it is dairy free and cheaper than Pure. I use AlproSoy yoghurts (soya) and have bought some Cheezly cheese to use and I have soya cream aswell that is used in cooking. You can still make up cheese sauces and things like that just put the other products in in place of the normal milk/cheese/cream etc.

Holland & Barrett is a good place for buying dairy free products and most large supermarkets have a free from shelf that u can make the most of.

Just to let u know aswell I was told by a dietician to stay away from goats milk products aswell as there is one component which is the same as in cows milk so if it's that your lo has problems with using goats milk won't help.
