my ds who is now 3yrs has had constipaton since being around 14 mths old. he too was on lactulose but it did nothing for him at all, in fact it gave him terrible cramps that left him screaming in agony. he was then given movicol and its a godsend. he on 2 sachets a day at the moment but hes just started potty training and has been doing normal poos on the toilet for the past week so im hoping to cut the dosage down a bit. he sees consultant on monday so we will see what he advises. i would definately ask your doctor about movicol. its made up mostly of water then the tiny bit of drug in it softens the poo to make it easier for your lo to pass.

Hi everyone, my little baby girl is 18mths old. She is suffering from constipation for the past 2 two mths. Before that she was like a clock work. She had a bit of temperature for 2-3 days two months ago. Then she started having constipation.(I don't know whether they are related) She is on lactulose maximum dosage. It is not working. She is still struggling. She is terrified whenever she has to poo. She eats her veg and fruits. No probs there. It is really horrible to watch her suffer. Any suggestion will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Have they not done any other investigation to see why they are constipated, as really when taking laxatives they dont really like them long term..... ok it could sort it self out but maybe not.
I only say because for 1st born who is now 11yrs, started with constipation at around 4 months, they gave lactulose which only softens the stool they still need to make themselves go............. then when he was 6 months he was on 10ml lactulose and 10ml senna morning and night, then at 9 months he had nurses coming to give him enemas, his consultant at the hospital just said it was constipation and to feed him the right things and everything was to carry on as normal, so he would have x-rays which would show a mass bulk the next day nurses would come out and give the tube up the bum.
All this went on till he was 3yrs old, then she decided to take him in to do a biopsy that came back clear, a month later she wanted to do another one that was un-clear so she said to come back in 2wks so they can do another biopsy but further up his bum (why not do all this in the beginning Ggggrrrrr) anyway that came back that he had been born with Hirchsprungs disease, she gave a big apology for leaving it so long, my poor baby had gone through all the pain and having to be pinned down to get a tube up his bum for nothing.....
Your children probably won't have this but because of my experiance and deep down knowing it was something more, i always think that if constipation has gone on for so long it should have further investigation.
