dd has antibiotics every day. She now takes it brilliantly. First of all we used to give her a syringe to play with and play squirting water into her mouth and she did it to us. Then start with the medicine. We used to do it in the bath and have more than she needed in the syringe. However she only has a quarter of a full dose every day so we weren't likely to overdose her tho' which might be a concern for you. We clap and cheer when she takes it and so does she! Now she takes it really well. As to Calpol, she has rectal paracetamol prescribed for when we need paracetamol. It took a while but as I said- she takes it really well now... except when she's ill, then it becomes a problem again! (just when she really needs it!)

Thanks for the posts! i have to use a syringe - spend 15 mins following him around with a spoon, then resort to force. Trouble is that sometimes he gags and throws up and as it's anitiotics it's important that he gets the full dose each time (especially as its affecting his breathing). He's the same with his inhaler, which we only use when he's desperate, but the stress of it all - pinning down and that - makes his breathing worse. I will just get on with it as I have to, and I really feel for the mums who have to give medicine everyday - makes me pale into insignificance. Thanks again!

Hi my dd 18mths is the same not all the time but sometimes i have to hold her and force it down her, she as medicine everyday 3 times a day twice at night she suffers from reflux so she as to have it. My eldest dd was like your son because she didn't need it regular she had to be pinned down also. Up until the age of 18mths i had to put eyedrops and cream regularly into her eyes as she constantly had conjunctivitis due to blocked tear ducts until she had an operation to unblock them. It is awful when they are like that but you know they need to take it do you syringe it in? Sharon x

I have a son who is fed through a naso gastric tube so his meds are put through there but before he had it put in he had meds 4 times a dy 3 diff ones i got so frustrated because he hated the meds i used to put it in his milk but was never sure if he got the right amounts then as he didnt drink all his milk
i think its really hard to give dhildren medicine i have heard there is a dummy type thing that you can give them medicine through but i dont know if your son has a dummy other than that the only option is keep trying to mix it with things and hope one of them works sorry to not be more help i know how frustrating it is to try to gethem to take meds.

Hi, looking for any advice on how to get a 3 year old to take his medicine. ds has been sufferning with infection induced asthma symptoms, he has been prescribed antibiotics today by the emergency dr and is also in need of calpol, but he absoultaly refuses any medicine - always been like this, but has been persuadable in the past. Today I have had to literally wrap my legs round his, hold both hands in one of my hands and force it into him - not good! he hates it and it upsets me. I need ideas past mixing it in yoghurt and stong juices (he always notices it's in there). Many thank girls! gonna post this on 2+ too.

Thanks to everyone! He's been a little better today, he seems to hate being pinned dwon more than the medicine itself, so he's starting to give in easier. I'm also bribing him with haribo - he's not had proper sweets at home before, so thats working as a novelty. Also found a lilac syringe today which he seems to be proud to call his own. So we're getting there - hopefully tomorrow will be easier still! Funny thing is that ds#2 (15 months) loves all medicine and is getting upset an jealous that he's not getting any.... Strange little things these small people are!
