I'm not sure but dd was also supposed to have a DMSA which is where they inject a radioctive isotope into the bloodstream and then a few hours later xray the kidney. This is to check for scarring. We didn't have this either. However with boys it is different and with every child it is different so please don't think I am saying don't do it! Also, the advice you've been given is right- they won't remember and everyone I've spoken to says it doesn't hurt it's just that they need to be kept very still and they can get a bit upset. An 18 year old i've spoken to who had these tests done when she was a child, doesn't  remember anything unpleasant about them which is a positive! My dd has only had the 1 UTI (touch wood!) and has regular ultrasound scans. We also send her urine off to be tested every time she is ill and we have a supply of test sticks so we can check for ourselves. I know it's worrying.

    Hi.

Thanks for replying. My ds2 is on timethropin (sp?) till a few tests are done. I got the appointment through for Micturation Cystourethrogram, which is on wednesday 29th oct 10am. I'm dreading it. I got a wee leaflet with the appointment, which explains alot.

After this the hospital said he'll need a blood test. Do you know what this is for?

Hi there. They do what is called a micturating cystogram. If your ds has had a scan that indicates some distension (fullness) in one kidney then they do this to check for reflux. They put in a catheter and inject dye into the bladder. They then xray to see where the wee goes. In reflux some of the wee will go back up towards the kidney. This is a procedure that lots of people on here have given me really good advice about (my dd has a refluxing left kidney) but after a lot of research we decided not to have it done as it is supposed to be quite distressing for the baby and the parents as well as involving quite a high level of radiation. However like most things, if it needs to be done and is beneficial for your child then it needs to be done. iyswim? The radiographer who we spoke to was happy to monitor dd with regular ultrasounds. The micturating cystogram shows whether reflux is taking place but is just a diagnostic tool. DD is on trimethoprim which is the common antibiotic kidney reflux babies go on. hth

    Hi.

My 8month old wee boy is going to be getting tested for kidney/urine reflux. Can anyone tell me what to expect? The hospital did speak to me about it, but I just couldn't take it all in. All I remember them saying is, "oh he's wee enough not to remember".

    Thanks in advance.
