Don't even get me started Emma...it has taken me months and months of fighting to even see a dietician!!! To see a consultant is just out of the question, Lord knows how many times I have asked for it, they just treat me like an over-reactive mother. He blatantly has allergies and breathing difficulties linked with this (they thought it was a floppy larynx at first) but still don't want to give us much help.

No!
My GP was enlightened, when I was a child and well aware of allergies and confirmed I had them to my mother when I was 5 and her previous doctor had said it was just one of those things kids do(scratch all their skin off!).
It was easy to prove I had allergies by a blood test because my allergies are type A the first recognised as they are linked to an sort of over active immune system.
When I became pregnant for the first time my GP went and read up every thing she could get on BF and allergies and lots of other stuff. She did a spin off medical paper on BF and improving breast milk quality!
I was also post code lucky as one of the top 5 allergy consultants had worked for years at our local hospital so the dieticians were well up on allergy care. I knew before my children were born to have a milk, egg, and nut free diet while BF. I was also given set appointments for the start of weaning, and handed over to consultant care at 9 months so they could look into milk challenge apointments at around 16 months.
Anti allergy milk wasn't a problem due to family history and a peads team used to dealing with allergies.
A lot of mums aren't so lucky and have to fight all the way. Often being fobbed off with soya milk, which hasn't been the prescribed milk of choice for some one with allergies for over 10 years now! It is not very good for LO's in general if you have a milk allergy you are more likely to have or develope a soya allergy.

At least they'll do some kind of allergy testing for you, if you ask about it now will they add in and egg test for you? Drs here quite simply refuse to test lo and most don't believe babies can have allergies through bf either (i've never tried her with straight out milk).
Emma - did you have to fight to get referrals or anything done? I've seen i don't know how many drs and we've a dietician and go to gastro clinic but those referrals took months of fighting and my health visitor to refer in the end. It tires you out fighting for everything when they just don't help when you get there. I know we definately need more help than we get - but how the hell do you get it when they just refuse point blank?

Tell your GP you want to be refered to a peadiatric consultant. your child has had breathing dificulties after eating some thing they allergic to this should not be being treated by a GP(general practicioner) or dietician but by a consultant via out patients!
That way you would be being provided with proper information regarding how and when to introduce eggs, which with previous history should be done via an egg challenge as a day case on the childrens ward. It would be the same with milk and any form of nuts(no nuts till LO is over 3).This can only be done via peads.
Depending on the type of allergies your child has(have they done any blood tests?) depends on wether they will grow out of the allergies or not. Some people will never grow out of allergies(I'm one of them) because it is a fault in their immune system. The likely stages for you to change allergies, grow out of them, or be symptom free are between the ages of 3&5, going through puberty, stopping puberty, menopuase, and pregnancy.
You need more help then you are getting.

Oh and I too got told he would grow out of it by the time he was 1, now I'm being told 5!!! Bit of a difference! Fingers crossed he will, but I'm sure I'll be used to it all by then.

Thanks for the reply, he is due to be allergy tested in January, but that is confusing as no-one seems to be able to explain it to me. It was arranged when we only knew about the cows milk protein, so I don't know if they will just do that or whether they are doing a fullblown allergy testing session.
I couldn't tell you if he's allergic to tomatoes as he won't eat them or anything with them in, even 1 mouthful gets spat out.

Hey hun, i can't really help at all but i feel for you with the lack of support your gp/dietician are giving you - we're the same. Lo has allergies to milk and soya along with all berries that we've tried (surprisingly though she can have strawberries) and she's dodgy with tomatoes. We've never tried her with eggs, citrus etc cos i'm too scared!
Has your lo been tested or anything for allergies? I also think my lo's reactions are getting worse as she grows older (despite much reassurance months ago that she'd probably grow out of it by 1, now they say 3 - i wonder how long they can add a few years to it and expect me to believe it?!) I've heard of many dieticians telling people to try their lo's with milk when they are clearly allergic to it - which i think is shocking.
The mmr was developed on egg but i heard recently this was changed or in the process of being changed - my lo is due it soon too but i'm going to ask the dr about it when i see them later.
I can't help much sorry - just wanted you to know you're not on your own. xx

Toby is allergic to cows milk protein and citrus. I have been advised to introduce new foods to him slowly because of his allergies which I am doing. He's now had a very nasty reaction to honey which has got me even more worried about introducing the other 'popular' allergens such as berries and eggs etc.
His reactions used to be upset tummies with runny nappies with bits in, then they started to cause hives and this recent reaction affected his breathing which he had to have steroids for. I'm really worried that his reactions are getting worse but the gp and dietician don't seem bothered by it. They say as long as he's not going into anaphylaxis shock then I'm not to worry, but who says he won't if they carry on getting worse?
Has anyone been in a similar situation with their lo? Any advise?
I'm also worried about the MMR vaccine he's due soon, as I've heard it has egg in, which he hasn't been tried on yet. Is that correct? If so, maybe I need to talk to the dietician about trying egg soon?
