I'll try answer the questions as best I can.

In the 1970's if you had a milk allergy they tried you goats milk or sheeps milk, sheeps milk was very hard to get hold of. Some elements of goats and sheeps milk are the same so in theory you could be allergic to both.

The problem was even in the 1970's some docotors thought allergies were all in the head!!!!!!! If your child had them you were a mother with an over active imagination(even if your child did take all their skin off in the night scratching).

Doctors trained in the late 70's learnt about type A allergies which could be proved using a blood test(there are more types now but that was the only one the said was real). Now they knew about allergies proper it was down to exculsion diets etc to find what you were allergic to and there were no subsitutes. About this time soya milk sort of arrived at health food shops in a big way. It was suddenly the new wonder milk. They made a soya formula for babies. It was handed out left right and center. Doctors could now sit back job done.

Only problem was little research had really been done on the milk or long term studies.  No one realised how high soya was in natural female hormones. It is  now used to make natural menopause drugs!!!!!!!

It has negative effects on girls as well as boys, I have not had soya for 15 years since I developed an allergy to it. But 6 years ago while taking to my dietician who had taken on my childrens care, she said the reasons they no longer prescribe soya one of them was very heavy periods in later life for girls. It has taken 15 years to get the soya out my system and not have to take meds when I am on to give me more normal periods. I suffered for years thinking filling night time towels in 2hrs was normal(my mother was useless with that sort of info)!!!!!!! If have chinese around the time of my period I have heavier flow.

Having soya ruinned my brothers milk teeth they all turned brown!!!!!!!

Soya is not a good idea if you have peanut allergy as they have recently found a family link with soya and peanuts.

They can still sell it as it is not unsafe per say. A lot of doctors not in the know fob you off with it as when they trained that was the milk they were taught to prescribe, anit allergy milks only started 10 years ago. Who knows what they will say about those in another 10 years time!

I think it's genuinely a serious problem. The real problem is the lack of research or knowledge or whatever you want to call it about allergies in babies and what to replace the milk with.

Soya milk isn't as expensive as a hypoallergenic one so most GPs who are inexperienced in babies allergies seem to be prescribing soya as a means of a) shutting the parent up  b) an easy solution and c) because they just don't know the dangers or enough about it.

I might be wrong in my assumptions but i've heard about soya being dangerous from numerous sources for a few years - i only started paying serious attention this year when my lo was diagnosed with milk allergy and then soya allergy.

You can always look at it the other way and say there are reports about everything these days saying how they can potentially harm you and cause you cancer etc so why should these be different? I can't answer that but i'd rather stay on the safe side and use a hypoallergenic milk. Though you never know, a few years from now they could be telling you these are dangerous and shouldn't be used.

Like i said to start with, i think it's a genuinely serious problem and i'm not sure why companies are allowed to sell soya milk - probably because of lack of knowledge/research. I can also say that if your dietician or gp is anything like mine then they will speak complete twiddle til you go away.... Just an opinion Do what you think is best for you and your lo hun xx
