Hi,
Im glad this thread is on here. Ive just brought my DD home from hospital at the weekend, she had a UTI which turned to septiceamia and ended up suspected meningitis. A lumber puncture(sp) ruled this out, but we have had a week from hell.
I only took her to the dr's with a high temp. She is now on antibiotics till shes had all her scans and tests and sees the consultant next March.
Im personally going to let her have all the tests to avoid this ever happening again. I just hope she doesnt have any lasting kidney damage. Its so scary and Im really worried so I know how you feel.
xx j xx

Hi there. dd (15 months ) has mild kidney reflux and has been on trimethoprim since 7 months. She has had 1 uti. She was diagnosed by ultrasound (on her) and they also found out she had a duplex kidney on the other side. Both kidneys work fine tho'. We refused the DMSA and the micturating cystogram as dd's reflux is so mild and the radiographer was happy to monitor her with regular ultrasounds. However your dd's sounds more worrying (just cos she's had so many horrid utis) and I would advise you get the 2 tests done asap. I can't believe your gp has been so slow off the mark. With dd she had the uti and was having the ultrasound and seeing the paediatrician 2 weeks later!!

Hi, I have a dd who is 4 and has kidney reflux since birth.
She was on Trimethroprim from birth and took other meds as well and was being catheterised 6 times a day and all night long, they had to keep chopping and changing her meds all the time and was getting infections every few weeks and loosing loads of weight.
The thing about the antibiotics is that they are so strong that they attack the good bacteria in the body as well as the bad bacteria which is why our lo's become so ill, I used to give Tia probiotic yoghurt drinks to help boost her immunity and give her cranberry juice to drink (white cranberry doesn't taste as sharp or acidic)
Eventually the drs decided that when she was having a urodynamics test, the one mentioned by a pp, that there was scarring on her kidneys and they needed to do something about it so they offered us Botox on her bladder as Tia has a neuropathic bladder and is incontinent due to having Spina Bifida, which we refused so they told us they could perform a Vesicostomy which is where they operate and bring her bladder up to the surface of her tummy about an inch below her belly button so her wee could just drain freely into a nappy, she has had this done and the change is amazing, she has completely changed from a really poorly little girl to one who has had about 3 urine infections since having it done (2 1/2 years ago)
Tia had this op because of her Spina Bifida and the other complications she has. I hope your lo gets better soon.

Hi Jodiesmum. I have a dd who is 16 months now but when she was 9 months was very unwell and GP diagnosed suspected uti. She has been on trimethoprim antibiotic since. She had an appointment at the hospital to get her kidneys and "tubes" scanned for signs of scarring but thankfully she got the all clear with that. We were told that she still needs the dye test (I think they refer to it as DMSA/DSMA?) and were told an appointment would probably come through around Christmas. We are so nervous about that. I think the waiting is the hardest. I hate giving her the antibiotic every night but I remember how poorly she was when she was first showing signs of the infection and I don't want her going through such pain again. We've been told it is something that she might just be prone to. Other babies get a lot of ear infections or stomach upsets and others get uti. It's just their thing. Girls are particularly prone to it. We were told it is something that she might grow out of and until then she needs to be on the antibiotic. Or, if something hasn't developed right since she was a foetus then she might need corrective surgery. I hate typing that, it makes me so worried.

hi my little girl is nearly 3 and all her life shes had problems with urine infections varying from a few a year to a few in a few months, she is currently under investigation and is goin 2 a dye scan in dec but they are telling me there is a suspition it may be mild kidney reflux, she is on medication until further notice and has been since august but im now being told one way of treating re occuring infections is to continue with the mediction until she either grows out of it or she becpmes ammune 2 the medicine at that point shed b put on something else,
she really does get unwell with these infections vomit stomach ache ,pain urinating high temp which leads 2 comnvultions, generally not y usual wee bubbbly girl,
just wondered if any othe rmummys have any experiance of kidney reflux in there female toddlers
