Do not take that for an answer. I was told I had to try for vbac and stuck to my guns. My MW also said that the mother has a choice especially as had an emergency section. If your consultant refuses ask to be referred to another one. Tell them you will report them and I certainly would take it further.

I'd go and see your GP asap.  I know it sounds very manipulative, but if you can cry whilst you are there it may reinforce exactly how scared you are of vbac.    Also for future appointments with cons, take someone with you to back you up.

I had absolutely no problem getting cs second time around and cannot believe how difficult some consultants make it.  It isn't like it is first baby and you just decided to have a cs because you felt like it.

I'm in a similar position. Had emer c-sect with ds 3 yrs ago. Went term +13, had to be induced but ds was back to back, ds was 8lb 12oz and had got stuck in my pelvis cos he was so big and long! On top of that, my botched my epidural up when I was fully dilated so every time I sat up after the c-sect I was leaking spinal fluid. Had to go back into theatre to try and patch my spine up, but it didn't worked and had to go back into hospital (without ds) for complete bed rest to allow the spinal membrane to heal. Had to have physio for 6mths but not until ds was 6mths old because they kept saying it was the recovery from the c-sect that was causing my mobility problems. Unsurprisingly, suffered with PND as a result of traumatic birth.

Don't want the same thing again. Want a natural birth obviously, but don't want the same things to happen again, cos 2nd babies are bigger, especially if they leave me to go overdue again! They want vbac but want them to commit to elective c-sect if I go week overdue, but feel like I'm asking for the earth by asking for this. Had a really sickly pregnancy this time and now don't feel like I've got the stamina for labour and birth. Plus having never gone into labour myself, I've no confidence that I will this time!

All very well being guided by the health professionals, but they don't always have YOUR best interests at heart, targets, theatre time and staffing levels all impact your level of care!

I discussed this exact issue with my GP during the week.  She said that if I was worried and felt pressured into having a VBAC she would write a letter on my behalf to the consultant stating my wishes.  I want an elective CS with this one (I'm only 10 weeks, but after DDs birth 16 months ago, I'm still traumatised  It ended up being an emergency CS with her being on IV antibiotics for 48 hours).

I'd do what the previous poster said and pursue it with another consultant.

If, hypothetically I was in this situation and could not get any sense out of anyone and get anyone to agree to an elective, I would do a complete opposite and tell them that I would like them to book me in for a home water birth.

I would say that under no circumstances would I give my permission to be strapped onto a bed and monitored and labouring flat on my back. This is the kind of VBAC they would probably want you to have after a previous section - there would be a degree of monitoring.

They would be very uncomfortable about delivering me at home in water and I have a feeling they'd be signing me up for my elective in no time.

But I am not anticipating any resistance from them when I next have one.

plain and simple answer is no , no one can deny you an elective after you've already had a c section, you have to let them know that you are having one wether they agree or not, by law they have to abide by your choice, that applies to every woman, even a first time mother who chooses a section for no medical reason.

you can complain to them about this behaviour and tell them to book you a date for your elective or you will go and see another consultant.

Hi, my first post on here. I'm 22 years old ( next saturday ) and 24 weeks pregnant  with my second child and he was an emergency cesearean due to a 3 day labour and him being distresse, ( he is now 4 ) . For this reason I have insisted on an elective cesearean this time round due to the fact of wanting to be in control of the suituation, i felt my first birth was very traumatic especially at 17 years old !

Up until this week no one has really questioned or tried to change my decision about having an elective however I have been in and out of hospital quite a few time this month with abdominal pains and the last time I was in I saw a different consultant to my usual one. I don't know why but she seemed to feel the need to try and persuade me to have a VBAC even after much protesting and even went as far as to write in my notes that I was starting to consider a VBAC if everything ran smoothly, I mean as if things weren't running smoothly with my first birth. I never even had the slightest idea that I would have a cesearean the first time round, my pregnancy as perfect , unlike this one.

I was so annoyed by this as f I had just suddenly decided to have a cesearean because I was too posh to push or didn't know what I was letting myself in for. Has anyone else been in this situation? and can they actually decline my request for an elective?

DOn't take no for an answer! If you want an elective, then make sure you get one. I had an emergancy section too, and wouldn't contemplate going through vbac now.

hello, i was always given the impression that 99% of the time you got a choice for an elective c-section if you have already had one due to rupture etc... If i was you, i'd contact your hospital and arrange to see a different consultant.
