Just been to mw - mine is at Chester le Street.
She says it is a minimum 48hours stay, but after that it really depends on how you are doing as for when you will be released.
As for holding baby in the theatre - she says that, unfortunately, depends on the mw on duty, and usually you'll not be able to hold until recovery. She says it's always worth asking as they sometimes let you.
She says there is a chair for OH to sit by your head and if she's on duty, she lies baby beside mums head, but mostly in dad's arms so that we can both (sort of) hold.
She also said that most things are gone through really thorough at pre-op visit, including usually a quick look at surgery and recovery rooms so I'll ask some more at that on Monday. Still dreading the op - but getting more excited about actually having my baby in 6days!
Hope this helps Kate

Have to add that when I said take baby to recovery room I forgot to mention that the only reason they did that is because my husband was there.

Hi there, I had my section at Durham on 11th of last month. The whole process and stay was handled brilliantly. I had a visit from both the surgeon and the anethetist 30 mins prior to op which I was grateful for. I had a truelly positive experience and can only speak highly of Durham (on this occasion)
My husband came into theatre but lasted 3 minutes and felt he had to leave before he passed out, so I was on my own but that was ok, the spinal is very relaxing and I was chatting quite happily to the anthetist and his assistant. When my daughter came out the midwife brought her round the screen for me to have a look at then took her to a part of the (small I felt!) room where everything goes on. In no time at all she was given to the anthetist assistant, wrapped in blankets, and she held my daughter in front of me where I could get an arm round her but not allowed to hold her myself as arms need to be straight for drips and monitors etc. The midwife took her again as i was feeling a little strained in my arm then asked if it was ok to take baby girl to recovery room, sraight opposite theatre in delivery ward. That was fine by me. Very quickly I was cleaned up and into recovery where I was able to hold my daughter properly, She latched straight on to breast feed and we were all laughing and very upbeat. The fact that I didn't get skin to skin contact straight away had no bearing at all
Super staff, and I got a private room so fingers crossed for you! Watch them though, I only stayed in over night as they said on second day they would normally transfer me to Bishop as not nearest hospital but I got to come home as I was feeding and doing everything myself.. it was too soon for me but better than a transfer. Afterwards when the surgeon came to see how I was she told me that it was my decision whether I was moved or not so don't feel railroaded into anything just because they put it to you as being the 'rules' so to speak.

I'm having my section at durham 2 weeks on friday. not sure what their procedure is but they said dh can be there so i assume they'll give the baby to him to hold and me if i want. there is a strong chance i'll have to have a GA though so in that case they've said baby will be cleaned etc and given to dad and i will see it when i'm out of recovery and feeling well enough. i'd speak to your midwife she shoudl be able to advise you. ihave an appointment on monday and plan to ask a load of questions so i'll see what i can find out and let you know

Is anyone due to have, or has anyone already had a section at Durham hospital?
I'm having one there next wednesday and just wondered if anyone can tell me a bit about how they do things there, as I keep reading that the baby will be handed straight to me etc, but my midwife has told me I won't be able to hold him or her until I'm in recovery?
Just after a bit of info if anyone can help.
Thanks
Emma

Thanks Kate
All the best to you too - hope all goes well. Maybe i'll see you on the ward!
