My friend was maid of honour for her sister recently and she wore a different dress to the other 2 bridesmaids! I think I'll have my 3 the same but I haven't started looking yet, so you never know!!!

I think it depends on what you want. Mine will be wearing the same, but I am only having 2 (a matron of honour and a bridesmaid) and thought that if they were wearing different dresses they would look odd.
I think it also depends on the ages of your attendants. Personally, I don't like to see young girls (age 14 and below) wearing strapless dresses, and appearing to be older than they are, but that is only my opinion.
Ultimately, it is your day, and you can have whatever you want, regardless of other peoples opinions.

Are they supposed to wear the same dresses? Or does maid of honour wear something different?

I am having 3 bridesmaids for my wedding and my dd1 aged 16 is wearing her prom dress which is burgundy taffeta, because it will be a nightmare to fins the same shade for the other 2 dresses, I have decided to have gold and ivory dresses with burgundy beading detail on their dresses and a burgundy bolero jacket, and a gold wrap/stole for my eldest dd to wear so they are all co ordinated.
