I dont think there is enough information out there about bowel weakness. You can pick up leaflet after leaflet about bladder weakness and all the pregnancy books are the same. I cannot remember reading anywhere about bowel weakness apart from doing a detailed search on the internet after I had my first child and noticed things were not returning to normal. I approached this subject with my health visitor and she agreed with me.
Apparently assisted deliveries are normally to blame for this damage but nobody tells you about it. I know that they have to use forceps/ventous but you should be aware of the possibilities of damage to the bowel so at least you feel better about approaching professionals about this. It took me 3 years before I spoke to anybody. I just kept thinking it would get better.
Anyway sorry to waffle on but it is good to be able to chat to ladies in the same position as it is such a taboo subject.

Forgot to say to Kerryplu, there is such a thing as a 4th degree tear but it is rare and not as common as 2nd and 3rd. 'A fourth degree tear goes through the perenium and muscles and extends down into the anal sphincter and the underlying muscles'. As if childbirth itself is not bad enough!!!

My ds is 9months and i am still waiting for my surgery appt as i too was stitched very badly and have a massive lump of scar tissue instead of a perenium!! I have had to go see a gynae consultant, a bowel surgeon and referred to Oxford for loads of tests. I am due back to work next month after nearly a year off and feel like i havent recovered from giving birth yet!
Reading here it seems that these things are all to commonly occuring in our understaffed maternity units!!!

So sorry you have got to have it all done again. I told my mw the same week and still not sorted. Today I have had a letter for the colon surgen who I was due to go and see on the 19th of may and now it has been changed to the 16th June.
I also have very weak muscels and had bio feedback but no joy it's like pooing your self is nothing. Why are they so crap at getting things sorted

well i had my check up at the dr, apparently the 'kind person' who stiched me up hasnt done a very good job so its looking like i have to be recut and stiched back up again, i also have virtually no muscle tension, he said this should have been picked up on my postnatal check but it wasnt my consultant who did it and he said i should insist on just seeing my consultant from now on. as if going through all the discomfort isnt enough, now ive got to go through it again. oh and it was written on my paperwork that i had a 4th degree tear, apparently there is no such thing! what on earth is going on!

may be as I know they tried a few times to get them on me so they must be pushing everything. Ds also had hand marks of his head where they tried to pull him out with there hands so they are not gental. Ds is next to me saying boobies to the woman in the m&s advert on the right.

I had to have an emergency c/section he was back to back and he was not coming down so had to go down to theatre for forceps and when I was given the spinal his head came down a bit further so the forceps was then tried but he got in distress so I had to have a section. I am thinking the forceps must of done something to me for this to happen to me.

I didn't have a c section but had failed forceps and had to be cut and vontuse ( not sue how you spell it) He also came out back to back so had the bigest part of his head coming out. It was to late to do a c section as he was to far down and they didn't find out until late he had turned the other way round. They tried to turn his head round by hand which wasn't nice. Think with all this and having to deliver on my back in stirups all the pressure was on my back end. Some docs say I will have to have a c section next time but others say I wont. I did plan a water birth as I have a back condition and ended up with everything I didn't want they kept on trying to get me to have an eperdural but wouldn't as that would have been a problem with my back.

I know it is horrible how can this happen after having a baby. My DS is 4 1/2 and I only started to notice when he was about 2. I had an emergency c/section with him after failed forceps and a planned c/section with DD who is now 5 months old. I cant understand how this has happened to me, I have read that it mostly happens when you have a natural delivery?

I know I have only told my boss so some people think I am a bit odd keep going to the loo. I was never told having a baby could do this to my bum they only talked about bladder and said not many people have big probs. My gran has better contol than me. I'm 27 and think why me it's not like i have had loads of kids and ds was 7lb 2oz so not a big baby.

I dont drive and also have to get the bus everywhere, since I have had DD I have been slightly constipated and therefore easier for me to control eg no accidents. I am worried about going to work no-one knows and I dont want to tell people, dont want them talking about me behind my back. I do feel old being like this.

I wanted the same thing but had to go back when ds was 5 months old. They have been good though with hospital etc but it's a bit hard as I work in FE and when I say I'm just off to the loo people still stand talikng to me and I'm like I have got to go now. Mind you my dh is the same when I have to go thats it I have very little warning. The thing I hate is I don't drive so have a bus ride of an hour to work and dread it every day more if i haven't been before I leave.

Hiya ladies, you will laugh at this. I was playing on the Nintendo Wii with hubby the other day and I had to jump around and do a silly dance and yes, I leaked. I ran to the loo and luckily hubby realised what had happened. I wont be playing that game for a while. Good luck with the baby making Kaz.
Glad the post has the correct spelling now!!

Hope the doc can get the ball rolling for you. I know what you mean about farting I tend to do this a lot even more when a poo is on the way at least it gives be a bit of a warning. Don't know how they can keep me waiting until the 14th May I am trying for another baby so if pregnant by then they wont do anything until after baby is born and don't want to get lost in the system again.

Hi same as 1 b4 but couldn't change it from bowl to bowel.
How is everybodys bum doing?
