I find the comment about car fumes slightly hard to beleive... if you are in an area where a child in a pushchair is at risk from polution and cars fumes then no matter weather it's a phil&ted or a standard pushchair.... they probably shouldn't be out there. And I don't think that a whole foot difference in height will have any effect either.
Maybe I am just standing up for the fact that I have a phil&ted, but I never went anywhere that my children were being gased by exaust fumes. I do live out of the city though and when we go shopping it's usually to a shopping center like Merry Hill or Telford. So that makes a huge difference.
I think looking at the I candy.... the add on bit is not for the pear to convert it... it is to convert the apple into a puschait that does the same as the pear by making the chassis longer to allow for the extra seat.

The back seat in a Phil and Teds is the same height as a standard Maclaren type stroller. The kids never got bored in there, and never stuck their fingers in the wheels - and we didn't even have mud guards, shock horror!
It's a fab pram, the best double I tried (and I tried a few.) The flaws I found were that the shopping basket broke due to DD kicking it, that was really it.

Yeah i really like the icandy too. I really missed not having a pram with my 2nd. I used the jane powertwin which i loved. I just missed being able to dress up the prem with pretty quilts!

i still think its a fantastic pushchair (icandy) it is about the same lenght as a phil and teds and also towards the end of the yr they are bringing out a new version and also something that you can convert your existing pushchair so you can then have the seats facing independatnt ways.
another thing that is a bit of a problem if you have a phil n teds is that the younger child underneath would have car fumes at their level as well

Good points:
The Pip frame is very well designed and is hinged so that once removed from the chassis it folds with ease to a flat small frame.
The fact that the seat frames are different sizes means that one packs inside the other when storing which means it will take up much less storage space.
Each seat frame has colour coded adaptors to prevent you from putting the wider seat in the narrower part of the frame and vice versa.
The Seat frame is the same for Carrycot and Pushchair seat. A different set of fabrics turns it into a Carrycot or a Pushchair seat (in the same manner as a Bugaboo). This is advantageous as post 6m your Carrycot reverts to a flat piece of fabric. However, this is a disadvantage if you want to play around with your permutations (see scenario 3) in which case you may need to invest is an extra set of seat frames!
The shopping basket is ample and not too obstructed by having two children in tow as well.
If you are buying the twin version and have never owned the single Apple – you can, should the need arise, remove the Pip frame and insert the larger seat unit directly into the chassis and use it as a single pushchair.
Not so good points to bear in mind:
Due to the design, when seats face you, the lower tier (usually occupied by the younger child) is out of view as it is obscured by the larger seat/carrycot on the upper tier closest to you (see rules paragraph for more detail).
As the design means that there is one larger carrycot and one smaller carrycot, the smaller Carrycot is unlikely to last 6m and the seat unit is not recommended before 6m although iCandy say if the child is sitting unaided, they will be ok in the pushchair seat even if they are not yet 6m.
As with any twin tandem pushchair – steering is tricky as the pushchair extends so far in front of you. That being said, with all the kit in place it does not feel too heavy and is more manoeuvrable than you might expect, bearing in mind the single Apple is not the most nippy of pushchairs. The 2 larger jogger wheels on the front may have something to do with the easier handling
Rules:Seats must always face the same way. You cannot have the children facing one another. The only exception to this rule is that when you have the Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix Car Seat on the upper back level facing you and the other child in the seat facing out. Thi

Scenario 2: You are expecting twins and you are buying the Pear pushchair without having owned an Apple first:
In this scenario you would need to buy a complete Pear at £…which would include a Pear Chassis, a Pip frame, 2 Carrycot Fabrics, 2 Seat Frames and Fabrics, (2 Maxi-Cosi adaptors and 2 raincovers also included in the package).
As the rule is that both seats must always face the same way, when both children are facing you, due to the design, the child at the back will always be on the lower tier and, as such, you will not be able to see them and they will not be able to see you. This is a real downside as it seems a shame that the child at the back can’t be on the upper level – however in forward facing mode this is resolved and the child at the back is raised above the child in front. One positive, however, is that unlike many tandems, the child in the back has plenty of leg room and the back seat can fully recline whether facing you or facing forward (although in fully reclined mode, the pushchair will be longer to steer).
Scenario 3: You have a toddler and a newborn so really only require the small carrycot fabric, however, if you want to have the option of every permutation, you can buy the large carrycot fabric as well (£6
so you can sit the toddler, while they are still little enough, in the narrower seat unit on the lower tier (usually recommended for the younger child) and will then have the option of having your newborn facing you on the upper tier closest to you which means you can see them (this may irritate the toddler on the lower tier who won’t be able to see much facing you with a carrycot in front of them). You would also need the small carrycot fabric, as if you wanted to have your toddler facing forwards – it would only make sense if they were in front and could see out, in which case, your newborn would need to be on the lower tier on the back in the smaller carrycot! Exchanging Carrycot and Seat fabrics on the smaller and larger seat frames however is not something you want to be doing on a daily basis, so really we would recommend that you spend some time at your local retailer checking out the options and deciding whether you want both seats to face you for the first 6 months (in which case get the larger carrycot fabric and be prepared to do battle with your toddler) or have both seats facing forward the majority of the time (and accept that on occasion when you want the seats to face you, your sight of your newborn will be blocked by your toddler).23/8/08 20:09
Here you go ladies.... this is for the Icandy pear and well worth a look.
This is the link to the site it is on.

The design is good, although there are a few flaws but, that being said, there is no perfect double pushchair and if you want one that offers lots of options, this could be for you.
As with all tandems, although the Chassis is a single Pushchair Chassis, when you have 2 seat units or 2 Carrycots in place, the length of the seat and Carrycot frame extends beyond the front wheels so that it still feels very long to push and crossing roads safely (considering how far out in front of you the pushchair is) is still going to be an issue.
Here’s how it works:
Scenario 1: You bought an iCandy Apple for your first child and now no. 2 is on the way and you need a Pushchair for 2 so you can upgrade your Apple to a Pear for £249. In upgrading you get the following kit:
A ‘Pip’ frame which slots into your existing Apple Chassis allowing you to attach 2 of everything. You also get 2 Pear Pushchair Seats (different size seats to your original apple seat), 2 jogger wheels which replace the 2 smaller wheels (or 1 jogger wheel depending on how you had your Apple set up) on the Apple to withstand the extra weight better, 2 Maxi-Cosi adaptors to fit the CabrioFix Car Seat (different to the Apple adaptors) and 2 raincovers.
Assuming you are upgrading because you are expecting a newborn, you will also need to purchase the Carrycot fabric (there is a large Carrycot and a small Carrycot and in this scenario, you would need the smaller fabric at £65 - Why? Because, as a rule with the Pear, the smaller child always goes on the lower tier as the lower tier is narrower than the upper tier).
The rule with the Pear is that both seats must always be facing the same way. With a toddler and a newborn you will be torn as to whether to have the seats facing you or facing away. Having the baby face you and the toddler face out is not an option. If your toddler is happy to face you – in this scenario the toddler will be on the upper tier facing you closest to you, and the baby on the lower tier facing you (but you won’t be able to see the baby because the toddler will be blocking your view). In this set up, as well as not being able to see your newborn, your newborn is the one protruding furthest from the pram so that their head is way out in front of the pushchair front wheels and this m23/8/08 20:00
HI kathryn 83... (same as me!) so do you then have to buy the seats for when lo has grown out of the carry cot or is that encluded also.
Although it looks a nice puschair. I could not have afforeded it if it were out last year. I sold the phil and ted cocoon on as you can pop the whole thing in the washing machine. If you can do that with the i pear then thats an added bonus.
23/8/08 19:57
Hi onlyme.... the phil and ted is getting come competators on the market now, I suppose I only know what I have been using, so cannot compare to anything else.
The phil and ted can be used as a single too. As a single pushchair there is loads of space underneath.

ive been looking at the icandy pear and i think im gonna go for that im going to buy it from a local nursery shop its £510 for pushchair, 1 carrycot, 2 footmuffs. it is so intercahnagable and can be used as a single as well i think its much better than the phil and teds
23/8/08 18:31

It looks good doesnt it, no point for me thou im only expecting 1st and think only have 1!!!!! I have got the phil and teds that i will use for work thou (im a nanny)

I had a look at it and it does look amazing, but can't figure out which one is the newborn and toddler position, or is it just for twins?
It look like it probably costs a lot of money to get all the separate peices but I didn't delve into the site quite that much.
It does look very funky and modern though.
23/8/08 10:18
I have just looked up the icandy pear WOW why have i never seen this before? Im defo gonna look into that it looks lovely ! xxxxx
23/8/08 09:45
I had the jane power twin and loved it. I looked at the phil and teds. At that time i was advised against it in the shop because of the problems with the wheels. She also pointed out that you could get stones, dirt and dust flying up to the baby on the bottom.
I wasnt really this that put me off it was the baby being in the back and not being able to see them. I like to look at this new baby that i have spent 9 mths making! I didnt like the thought of shoving the baby in the back and not being able to get at them properly.
I know lots of people who have them. Its just not what i want from a double pushchair.
We are all different which is why there are so many pushchairs out there! xxx

Not at all Marajade.
You are a mum, we are all like that about our kids.
As for the phil&ted... it is always good to see the pro's and cons. I am not offended at all. My mate had a jane power twin and hated it, so we can't all like the pushchairs we have.
I bought mu phil and ted before the wheel problem was raised, so they sent me the wheel guards for free.
And it is a good point mentioning the safety of the larger chld HAVING to be on top. It is stated in the user manual. However I have stiil heard people on hear complain that they have put the older child in the back and it has tipped back. Well duh! Thats gravity for you! lol.
I did find that approaching 6 months my daughter was abit fussy about lying flat in the bottom as she could sit up at this point and like you say about your, was and still is a nosey madam! Bus as all puschairs go, six months is a guidline developed from baby milestones with six months being the age the avarage baby sits up. I took the initiative thinkink that if she can sit up, then she can sit in the back seet no problem. But if she couldn't, she wouldn't be missing anymore than she would than if she were lying on the floor anyway. I just made sure that I had a head support cushion in there (which I pinched off her carseat) as phil&ted do not provide one with the pushchair.
22/8/08 15:00
yes i am not a fan of car seats/travel systems either as i dont drive and out and about a lot more than two hours walking at a time i like them to lie in comfort not hunched up in a car seat all day long. i sound a right fussy cow dont i lmao.
22/8/08 14:51
sorry forgot to say i dont think i would get much use out of it as i couldnt see one of my babies being happy in the cocoon bit for up to 6 months as they all been nosy little so and so's lol and i believe the doubles kit seat isnt reccomended for less than 6 months? and as you are supposed to have the larger child in the front part as reccomended by p&t because of possibility of it tipping up there isnt another option other than them lying flat in the cocoon section up till 6 months? i may be wrong but im going on the demo i had instore and on people who had it when i had dd2 last year.

Just been looking on e bay at the apple and there are a few good examples on there, however I can't see how that can concert into a double pushchair, I would love to hear from some people who have it and see what they think.
I don't even need one! But I just like the look of it. LOL!
