hun as a known carrier u should still be treated durinr labour but all hospitals seem different, i had a late mc at 17 wks and was found to have a bad strep b infection, my last preg i was immediately tested and put on antibiotics (b4 results came throu) as a precaution then was given the antibiotics after my dd was born.

Hi
I was found to have GBS after suffering a miscarriage, so this pregnancy I mentioned it and mw said they will not test as their unreliable and that it cannot be picked up on routine urine test, only if sent off. Also that 2 out of 4 women have it and it comes and goes therefore you only get abtibiotic therapy in labour if it has been picked up in that particular pregnancy. To cut a long story short I rang hospital and they said they would not treat nor test me and it the risk is when waters break, which they will not allow you to go any length of time after without having antibiotics anyway for GBS aswell as other infections, however if it was picked up in urine they would as GBS should no be in bladder. I then spoke to my mw who never heard of this so was going to test my urine (as thought urine had to be in bladder for certain length of time before sending off) she rang microbiology who stated urine tests showing GBS are not reliable but the swabs are, so she gave me the swab to take a perineal swab just to check and be safe, I am yet to get result. However it just shows if you speak to others even amongst the professionals and different areas everything is thought of or done different, there is not clear guidance on GBS and therefore only makes you worry more.
Hope I have not rambled on too much but I would certainly check with the hospital midwives where your having baby especially if it's in another area, as I mentioned this when 7 weeks pregnant and was fobbed off a bit and it is only now at 36 + 2 I am being tested after making my own enquires etc.

I had it with my dd who is 3 now, she contracted it at birth and was very poorly for a while, luckily she pulled through but I have been told that I wont even be tested this time round I will just be treated as though I have it as strep b can come and go willy nilly so you may not have it now but could come your due date so I deffo think they will still give you the antibiotics.
good luck

i had strep b in my last pregnancy, iwas given a drip throughout labour and everything was fine.
i asked my mw at my booking appointment about wether ad be tested for it again, she said they would just give me a drip again. no test would be needed if ive had it be4. its something that can come back so easily. just make sure its written on yr notes. just go into hospital as soon as yr waters have broke, i didnt even know mine had broke last time, but fortunatly my contractions came on really quickly and i had to go straight in anyway.

It's a horrible thing which isn't given much coverage at any MW/Antenatal appointment coz if it was then the NHS might have to end up paying for every pregnant woman to have a RELIABLE test at about 37/38 weeks (the NHS test isn't accurate).
I didn't have any symptoms either, they just found it in my urine at a routine check up with the MW, then did the vaginal swab too. But I ended up with it making me very ill about a week after DD was born - I had a clot and Strep B in my womb - thankfully it didn't effect DD at all.
It angers me that it's hush hushed when it's so deadly!!!!!

I think she found out at 37 or 38wks. It all happend so quickly for her, and she had no symptoms at all. I really hope and pray to god - if there is one up there - that my friend has a stress free preg and birth, and all is ok with lo when born. I couldn't watch her go through the same again. It really has made me think though. Strep B was something I never knew much about before. I am a lot more aware of it now though.

Hiya,
I had GBS last pregnancy, they found it in my urine and my vagina at about 30ish weeks (can't remember exactly). I got my IV antibiotics, I was induced so I think I actually got more than one dose and DD is fine. There is a very very very small but very serious risk that comes with the antibiotics so they say it's not a good enough reason to give them to you just coz you had GBS in a previous pregnancy.
Have a read at the gbss site FAQ page.....

I will be asking my consultant the same Question as you when I see him/her at the end of Nov.

Although i have no experience with this mysel, my best friend had strep b and sadly she lost her baby when he was 11 days old as he caught the infection. She is now 19wks and has been told she will have an antibiotic drip as soon as her waters break, and during the whole labour. She has opted for c section but the doctors say it will not prevent transfer of the infection.

Hope this info helps.

Hi
I had a Strep B test which gave a positive reading for strep B whilst pregnant with DS who is 4. I am now pregnant again and due in June 09. Does anyone know if I would need to do another test towards the end of this pregnancy or am I still seen to be a carrier and will be treated with antibiotics again whilst in labour.
Shelley

I had it with my first and it has been written in my notes for me to have the antibiotics in labour again this time. It was picked up by accident first time round as I had a swab as I thought my waters were leaking.
