Ds had dilated kidneys from his 20 week scan and he had regular scans (or rather I did!) throughout the pg... On the day we were allowed to go home they scanned him again and they found that it had corrected itself...

He did have to have some medicine (can't remember what it was now - it's nearly 2 years ago ) but he's been fine...

Hope everything is okay for you x

HI Cutiepie, this is my first time posting so hope it works ok. I am DIM and also had my 20week scan on 3/11, and was completley shocked to be told my baby (which happens to be a boy) has a disstended bladder and both kidneys (renal pelvis in each) were 8mm and 9mm, which apparently is double the max size they like. As it happened i had a consultant appointment booked for the next morning, so the MW gave me some info about what they had found and said they would be looking at a rescan in about 4wks. When i went to see the consultant she then told me a little more and booked me in for a scan in 2wks, with her and another consultant who is trained in this field.Normally they will leave it for 4wks. But what she did say was that the normal cause is a blockage causing a 'Back Wash', if they did not show any signs of returning to normal they would look at an operation, the extreme would be doing it while still in the womb. There is also a chance that i could be refered to the UCL. The one thing i was told by them was to not go searching it up on the internet, as it would just give me more worries. Im sorry this has been a long posting, if you would like to pm me feel free maybe we could help each other through this.  By the way i am 38 and this will be my 3rd child i have a boy of 11yrs and a girl of 4yr. I am trying to stay positive, everything i have read on the High risk and special needs forums has given me hope.

    Hi Cutiepie,

I think I responded to your post regarding this on DIM. They did also tell me at the 20 week scan that renal problems are really common in boys and they often go away by the time the baby's born.  My lo has the same problem and have been told not to worry.

Interesting, I wonder why that is.. I didnt want to find out the sex of my baby at scan and we told the midwife (sonographer) and she very kindly said (when lookin down there)  ooo look at that, and pointed at what looked very much like a willy lol.. and then I read that it occurs mainly in boys (kidney) and so Im now looking for a boys name lol as we only had a girls name picked lol!

I was told by my sister`s mil (whos a mw) that in over 90% of the cases it is boys that it occurs in.

Hey hon. My ds (now 3.5) had this at my 20 week scan. He had it in both kidneys, but worse in the left one. I was scanned again at 28 weeks, when they said it had gone in his right but was still there in his left. I was then scanned again for presentation at 35 weeks and they found it in both again!!!

At birth he was put onto a low dose of trimethoprim, he had to have it every night, and was then scanned again at 6 weeks, where they found his left kidney was still dilated. We had another scan 3 months later that found it had gone down a bit but was still there. We then had another scan at 12 months which found they were clear, so we were told to stop the antibiotic. We then had another scan 3 months after that to check it was all still clear, which it was, and then we were discharged from specialist care.

We were told that in most cases it is gone by birth, but in those cases where it isnt the majority self-correct by 12 months. He has never had any problems, no urine infections etc, and has no lasting effects. Its very rare that its any more than an immature valve, so please try not to worry (although believe me i know thats easier said than done lol!).

    Hi there,

At my 22 week scan my baby had an enlarged left renal kidney(something like that?!) which was 6.9mm. I am scheduled for a 34 week scan to check it again but had a scan at 24 weeks due to a brain ventricle being larger than it should have at 22 weeks and the kidney was checked at this scan and had gone down to normal size.

The sonographer and then consultant I saw at 24 weeks said it is usually due to immature kidneys and more often than not sorts itself out by 34 weeks and if it doesnt baby is usually put on antibiotics after it's born to stop infections.

Hope it gets better but not to worry too much (much easier said than done I know!!)

Hi there - dd was diagnosed with dilated left kidney at my 20 week scan.  I had another scan at 25 weeks and it was found to have got worse so they sent us to see specialists at Kings.  Hers turned out to be a duplex kidney which basically means there were to 2 sections to the kidney each with it's own uretha (the tube that runs from the kidney to the bladder).  I think there are other reasons for dilation as well so your lo may be different.

I know how worrying it is to find things out like this when your pregnant but, in hindsight, we were so glad to know so early.  By the time dd was born we had seen all the specialists and sorted out her likely plan of care.  She was scanned the day she was born and put onto antibiotics to prevent infection.  She then had to have surgery at 6 months to remove one part of the kidney and one of the uretha which went really well.  She continued to take the daily antibiotics but on her first check up after the op (when she was just turned a year) she was taken off of these and now just has to go back for a scan when she's 3 before hopefully being completely discharged.

She is now a really healthy (and troublesome!) 2 year old and you'd never know she'd had a problem (even her scar is almost completely faded).  In fact, because everything was planned out before she was born and she started the antibiotics on day 1, she's never had a uti, even before she had the surgery.

Hope everything is ok with your lo.

Hi everyone i had my 20 week scan yesterday and both my babies kidneys were dilated (mild) something about refluxing urine back to kidneys and causes them to swell... I am getting rescanned at 34 weeks and sonographer said theres a chance it will have developed normally at this stage and if not baby will be scanned t birth...and taken from there, basically...anyone else had this or have any advice would be greatly appreciated... Thankyou x
