Also I forgot to add.... mothers who have the strep b infection in the vagina in earky pregnancy do not always have it at the end when labour begins. So you may not even have it by then.

Definatly NOT better for lo to catch strep b than have a section. Before strep b was ever really known of babies would get seriously ill from the effects. All of which you can find on a google page.
My friend has just had a baby and had such problems with strep b.
She had been in labour for almost 30 hours from when her waters broke to when she had the baby, they did swabs while she was in labour after she had past 18 hours, as thet is when they consider baby at risk from contractin the imfection if mum has it.
As soon as the baby was born she was put on anti biotics as a precaution. Mums test results came back positive, so they carried on with the ani biotics for 4 days. On the fourth day baby's blood tests came back negative, so the meds were stopped and they were both discharged! And they are both doing well.
Unfortunatly many if not most hospitals do not do routien screening for strep b despite the awful effects it can have on a baby. BUT, if a mother has had a test and strep b is present then a course of ani biotics is administered to mum while in labour to stop the infection being passed to the baby. And baby is monitered closely and given a blood test to make sure it has not been passed on.
A c section would not need to be done if the hospital follow correct procedures for a mu carrying strep b. I don't think a c section is eally an option that the hospital would give in that situation.

I think risk wise you're probably safer for your lo to catch the Strep B than put them through the trauma of a c-sec - honestly its not that bad if you don't get the antibiotics, but chances are you will so please jst try to relax and let nature take its course and try to enjoy whats left of your pregnancy before another little being comes and invades your life!!
Good luck to you, keep us posted x

Hi all thanks for your comments and thoughts.
I'm still not 100% sure either way as to what I want but still can't get my head round the fact that if i give birth normally and she contracts the infection i will never forgive myself and always have the 'what if' there in the back of my head.
Expecting to be made redundant on Thursday so that's another thing to worry about. My poor little baby must be stressed out!!!!

It is detected in Mum with a vaginal swab, this isn't done routinely on the NHS (although it should be), I have posted links on another thread about what it is and how to get tested x

Hi all
well i have just got back from the hospital and feel for the first time that someone is taking me seriously they are concerned because of my breathing i was with the consultant for over an hour i didn't actually get to talk about the birth as there was so much of my history to talk about, but i have an appointment next week to see someone from thorascic and then i have to go back to see the consultant on the 1st december to see if more can be done for me i just feel better because she agreed with me they shouldn't of fobbed me off at the begining and there is obviously a problem and to have my thyroid checked again so more waiting but i do feel happier that someone is listening to me.....AT LAST!!!!!!

Hi
I have read about strep b as I had it picked up in previous pregnancy that I miscarried and am awaiting test results for this pregnancy currently. I have looked into it and even if you have a section it does not reduce the risk of baby contracting it, as long as it is diagnosed and in your maternity notes then the hospital would treat for it and if you do not arrive to hospital on time then the baby would be immediately treat to prevent anything occuring. I understand how anxious you must be I would ring the hospital and ask to have a visit to answer all your concerns and what there procedures would be if you didn't get there on time etc etc to hopefully put your mind at ease. Good Luck

Hi, I am booked in for m 2nd c-section in 2 weeks, and understand your reasoning for wanting one. I'm booked in because my DD1 was an emergancy, and I like you am a worrier. I have been really lucky, both my MW and Consultant have been very supportive, and said what ever type of birth I want I can have.
I think go in to see your Consultant, tell them how you feel, and that you will be able to relax much better if they will give you a c-setion. Good luck. Let me know how it all goes

I had Group B Strep with DS and I didn't get to the hospital in time to have the antibiotics.
We had to stay in for 24 hours where he was observed every 3 hours or so day and night. The morning after he was born a MW thought she heard him grunting when breathing so sent him up to SCBU for the paeds team to check him over. He came back as all fine but just to be safe they decided to give him a course of antibiotics. This meant putting a drip in his arm which wasn't nice but he was able to stay with me on the ward and every 12 hours for the next 48 hours he went up to SCBU where they gave him the antibiotics. Meanwhile he was still being checked every 3 hours. After 48 hours they stopped the antibiotics, we then had to stay in for a fuether 24 hours to be observed, he was then given the all clear and the drip removed.
We were in hospital from Friday lunchtime to Tuesday lunchtime and to be honest it was actually quite nice as we got qualtity time on our own, time to bond and establish BF and time for me to be get to some kind of normal before going home to the chaos of life that included a 20 month old daughter!
For me personally, the risk of a C Sec compared to the stress of having GBS and possibly not getting to hospital in time doesn't compare - I would much rather my child had the chance of a vaginal delivery as that is always the best option when possible, even if that did run the risk of baby having to have the IV antibiotics.
Please don't stress, thousands of women give birth without even knowing they have GBS, but as you do know then every precaution will be taken and you will both be looked after.

Does the baby normally have to be given anti biotics?
My friend had a baby girl on Thurs and they did swab on here as she has been in labour for 2 days after her waters broke on tue. They started baby on ant biotics at 12 hour old as a precaution ans it was a good job as my friend had strep b. She know nothing about it, and to be honest I don't either!
The doctor on mw won't tell her anything about it which is really worrying her as she knows they are not telling her 4 a reason.

Hi Candi,
Bless you! Number 4 hey! I think if I do have any more I will wait a while next time.
I just se it as we should be entitled to have our babies the way in which we want them.
It'd all ratios and risk factors with me for one reason or another but this I feel I can control if they let me.
Ler me know how you get on on Monday hun and I hope you get what you want.

Hi i think your making sense but my sister-inlaw has strep b and didn't find out till after her daughter she was born she did have to have antibiotics for quite a while and tests but is a very healthy 5 year with no problems what so ever

i'm on my 4th and last.... my first 2 daughters were born in hospital which i hated the experience my third was born at home and i can't say that was great as my contractions were 10 minutes apart right up till the birth and i was at 7cm when i felt pressure in my bum we know that feeling when i told the midwife i could feel pressure she said it was impossible as i was only 7cm and my contractions were still 10 mins apart but i knew no 3 was comming when i got on the bed (went with my own instincts as i had done it twice before) her head was crowning and then it was panic stations as there has too be 2 midwifes for the birth or they have to phone an ambulance just incase extra help is needed my husband had to get all the birthing equipment out with i could see he was paniking and so was the young midwife (this was her 1st homebirth alone) so i don't have much confidence there and i have been quite poorly with number 4 my asthma is really bad and i am breathless all the time which i can't even take my children to school or go shopping on my own or do a great deal really and i seem to have a rapid heartbeat but they are saying that its down to being pregnant i had this before i was pregnant but know one is listening all this leaves me really exhausted so i am quite worried how i will cope with a normal delivery so would be really grateful of a c-section myself but don't think i will be allowed one i have to see the consultant monday morning but im not expecting great things as like i said before everyone is putting it down to being pregnant my midwife even said it will be fine to have another homebirth but obvously not keen on the ideal so i can understand your concern sorry for the very long comment and the very long moan
if i could breath properly would be happy to do a natural again. -

Hi funkydee!
I live about 40 minutes away but can get a lift with step dad.
My problem is i'm a stress head. If they aint doing what i ask them to do ie give me the antibiotics quickly etc i'm likely to kick off. Don't get me wrong i'm not generally violent andnot saying that i'd hit them but my tongue will have venom.
I have come to terms with the fact that my baby may be downs but cannot deal with a brain damaged baby. I would rather go through the pain and let my baby come into the world in a nice calm environment knowing that i have done my upmost to protect her.
i would much rather have a home birth and be able to pick my ten 18 month old boy up for cuddles etc than have a c section and stay in but i want this for my unborn.
Am i making sense?

i had strep b in my last pregnancy, and i had no problems at all with a vaginal delivery, i didnt know my waters had broken, when i got too hospital my contractions were a few mins apart and when they examined my i was 6cm dilated. they said u can go straight too labour suite as yr waters have gone. then they administerd some anti biotics. to be honest it didnt worry me. i know when u read up about it it is very upsetting but this is worse case senario. do u live far from the hospital? could u not just get a taxi in when u go into labour. try not to let this worry you so much, enjoy the expierience of giving birth. it is more common than u may think.as far as i know the hospital will not give u a c section purely because u have this bacteria present.

hi all! just wondering if anyone could help me out with the above?
i found out i was pregnant when i was 10 weeks gone and since then have had a number of problems.
it started off with subchronic hemotoma and i had a big bleed. then i had my results for downs back which said i was high risk and now i have been told i have group strep b.
i have seen one consultant about requesting a section and she said there were risks associated with sections for example respiratory distress and the recovery time is lonnger than vaginal birth but i just feel as though i'm gonna be dead distressed when my waters break, contractions start etc in case i don't get to the hospital in time and they don't get the iv antibiotics in quick enough.
this is my 3rd pregnancy. i miscarried my first and gave birth to my ds naturally without drugs at a birthing centre in june 07. it isn't that i'm scared of a normal birth or anything it's just the risks with the strep b i'm worried about.
i just want to feel as though i have done everything in my power to protect my baby and this way i aint gonna be stressed as it's all planned and i know when, where and how.
i look forward to your replies *** src="http://my.bounty.com/smiley/msn/wonder.gif" alt="" /> .
