They're usually all compatible, Brio, Tesco and Ikea definitely are.

Does anyone know if the Brio train tracks and trains work on the woolies track and table set? Also if the Tesco set can work with that too?

Tesco have a good basic set for £10 and a tunnel/station add on for £10 too. DS has used that for the last year and we've just been raiding car boots for extras and have got bridges, junctions etc for about £1 each. If you can find an Ebay bundle close to you for pick up then you can get a real bargain. The website www.jesters.com has some good extras on it too.

Ikea have packs with various bits in - as far as I know they connect to other types. Also Tesco have their own wooden railways too. Failing that, ebay's probably your best bet
