No they are quite efficient these days, esp as they have the thermostats.
We've had one for years in one of our rooms where we need extra heat. Some months its run night and day and doesnt seem to make much difference on the electricity.

are these expensive to run? i need tw o for the kids rooms and these would be perfect. out gas heating is rubis!!!

My local store had these for sale today at this price so it may be worth checking asap. They also had a Honeywell panel heater for £49.99
